There aren't quite as many murderous gun nuts in America as you might think, O. I really don't think it'd be a factor at a PO.com convention.

I do agree with the last part of your post. And it's nice to be able to say that I agree with anything you write.

Australia is a long way away. You'd have quite a plane bill.

Yeah, I couldn’t justify flying to the other side of the planet for any reason. There are already too many unnecessary trips in the world, and I wouldn’t like to add to them. I suppose we could have a smaller southern hemisphere convention as well. Or we could all meet up online somewhere. Oh, wait…

Let's hope it doesn't get carved up into zillions of vacation homes, Ron. Or is the real-estate feeding frenzy already well under way?

Since this thread has been bumped, I'd like to take this chance to pose a question about possible PO convention locations, should one be held sometime in the future.

Heineken has suggested Kansas City as a good, central location. I would vote for someplace along the east coast, as there tends to be a higher concentration of folks from this region as opposed to the west coast, so that could include such cities as Washington, DC, Atlanta, GA, and Orlando, FL. Reason why I would put Orlando under consideration is due to the competitive airfares to that city as opposed to someplace like K.C. or even Atlanta - even flights from as far away as London are cheap to fly into that city. And we can all make fun of how car-dependent that city is...LOL.

On the other hand, if we're to be true to our roots concerning the effects of peak oil, we should put more PO-friendly cities on the list as well. Possible candidates would include Boulder, Colorado, Madison, Wisconsin, and my personal favorite, Ithaca, New York. That place just rocks, and I'd jump at any chance to attend any sort of convention there. :-D

So, how about you folks, what would you put as a top candidate for a PO convention if you had your say? Members of other countries are welcome to chime in as well, as I know this isn't an entirely American membership.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Heineken', 'M')y God, are we really that afraid of meeting each other? Is "anonymity" really that priceless?

If PO.com members can't even hold a convention, and converse civilly with people they have disagreed and argued with, how are they going to handle PO itself?

What about all that talk about the importance of "social capital"?

Just talk.

Doing is different.

Reality is different.

Half the people on these forums are mean spirited Social Darwinists, who don't believe in social capital. Some aren't mean spirited but Social Darwinists, for other reasons. Those I'd like to meet. The mean spirited ones can all flame out genetically, together, for all I care. Would I like to meet them? Yes, and punch them in the mouth, because there's a limit to my patience.

Fight Club was one of my all time favorites. That movie incorporated more relevant philosophical and pyschological insight into the modern mind, than just about any movie I've seen.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Heineken', '

I'll make it there anyhow though.

How about having a few mini conventions at the same time in a handful of different locations? That way we wouldn't have to burn so much [s]fossil fuel[/s] cash getting to one distant single location.

For example, we could have them in a half dozen places such as possibly Houston, Portland, Boston, SF Area, and maybe a few other places such as Sydney and London.

I think it would be great! :)

Somehow I'm turned off by the idea of regional conventions. It wouldn't accomplish the goal of a convention, which is for everybody to meet everybody (who is sufficiently motivated to show up, that is). I wouldn't get to meet Ludi, Threadbear, Eastbay, and so many other names that matter to me.

Byron, a national convention on the East Coast seems unfair to the people out West. I understand your point about airline hubs, but my own form of transportation would be to drive, I think. See a bit of the country. Kansas City, MO, is about a 16-hour drive from here (and my drive would be among the longer ones). Two days and one night at a motel (haven't been in a motel in years; might be an interesting sociological study).

Isn't St. Louis a major airline hub? Close enough to Kansas City.

Maybe Shanny has the best idea---hosting a party for those sufficiently crazy to show up, any which way they can get there. I'll bring the Heineken(s).

Somehow I had grander notions, though---an event that would define our organization, if that's what it is, in the medium of reality. We'd hold a press conference, even. Give speeches, publish minutes. Maybe have some vendors.

An even grander fantasy is the intentional community one, populated by a bunch of us who get together and take the plunge. I could, conceivably, be open to that after my mother passes on or goes to a nursing home.

Am I drunk?

Some members I have no interest in knowing on a personal level, either because their politics are so diametrically opposed to me or they seem borderline psychopathic. I mean, what would I talk to Anarky321 about? I'm going to wind up blowing the guy's head off after TSHTF if he comes at me looking for his next meal. Or you'll have Monte walking around looking at who he'd like to "cull" proactively to reduce the excess population. Or you'd have Eastbay walking around in green fatigues waving the cuban flag. Or Virginian with baby in one hand and semi-automatic rifle in another.

I think the convention idea is a nice one, but only up until the black vans pull up. I'm certain TPTB would certainly appreciate our efforts to gather in one place so they wouldn't have to spend so much time looking for us when TSHTF.

Yes, they could nuke the "site."

I know that black van is waiting for me, but it might be shaped more like a hearse.

Humor is great, terrific, but it tends to deflate the convention idea and send it into the tomb of dead threads. That's what happened the first time around, anyway.

Got a chuckle out of that Mos. Actually I don't even own any fatigues, well, unless you count my couple of sets of std issue rip-stop which I have in black only, but haven't worn them in years. In fact, I really hope I never have to slip into them again. 8O

I'm just brainstorming about the multi-site idea. I really, really like the idea of a meeting of any kind with such a diverse group all unified in our understanding of the crisis about to unfold regarding the finite nature of oil. I think it would be an absolute hoot! I promise to arrive unarmed, as I've been for nearly three years now. :)

Hey Mos, maybe we could arm wrestle over what flag to carry!! I don't know anything about you, but win or lose it would be a great icebreaker, don't ya think!
