Duties of the Vice President

Unread postby Tanada » Mon 01 Sep 2008, 22:21:11

People keep mumbling what is the VP for here and there, other than to suceed to the Presidency in a worst case scenario?

Wikipedia says $this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')s President of the Senate (Article I, Section 3), the vice president oversees procedural matters and may cast a tie-breaking vote. There is a strong convention within the U.S. Senate that the vice president not use his position as President of the Senate to influence the passage of legislation or act in a partisan manner, except in the case of breaking tie votes. As President of the Senate, John Adams cast twenty-nine tie-breaking votes—a record that no successor except for John C. Calhoun ever threatened. His votes protected the president's sole authority over the removal of appointees, influenced the location of the national capital, and prevented war with Great Britain. On at least one occasion he persuaded senators to vote against legislation that he opposed, and he frequently lectured the Senate on procedural and policy matters. Adams' political views and his active role in the Senate made him a natural target for critics of the Washington administration. Toward the end of his first term, as a result of a threatened resolution that would have silenced him except for procedural and policy matters, he began to exercise more restraint in the hope of realizing the goal shared by many of his successors: election in his own right as president of the United States of America.

In modern times, the vice president rarely presides over day-to-day matters in the Senate; in his place, the Senate chooses a President pro tempore (or "president for a time") to preside in the Vice President's absence, and the Senate maintains a Duty Roster for the post, normally selecting the longest serving senator in the majority party.

Which pretty much sums up the current situation, the VP has a lot of power however by convention which is to say, Washington Insider rules of behavior, does not excercise those powers much if at all.

Should the VP follow convention and let the power of the office lie fallow? Or should they use those powers which they were given by the Constitution?

The Senate is often referred to as the place good Legislation goes to die. An Active VP could prevent that, or at least put a dent in the death rate for important legislation.

If the whole blessed government would spend all day playing golf and do nothing else we'd be far better off.

Duties of the Vice president include overuling national defense heirarchy and deciding when or when not to shoot down appropriate airliners, and they are the top go-to guy that makes the final military decision above any general of the airforce. Kind of serious responsibility.

Wonder why chain wasn't fired for making inapropriate decision not to shoot down an airliner?

Most Vice presidents don't realize this responsibility, wonder if they will be as active on the next event?

Agree 100%, but this thread is about the VP, not the Government as a whole. Any thoughts on that SPG?

Yes. His only duty should be to organize a golf tournament which lasts four years and every federal elected official is required to play all day every day for the four years.

Personally I think if SP gets elected VP and if she uses the powers of the position as the framers intended instead of letting them just sit passive it will make for a VERY entertaining next few years.

Not to mention that as an originalist I think the VP SHOULD be excercising those powers instead of ignoring them. If the VP were known as a powerful position it would be a heck of a lot easier to attract good people to the office as running mates.

Providing the youth of america with jackoff material? That might help in the abstinence campaign (assuming onanism is considered ok).

You've obviously forgotten Jocelyn Elders. Republicans do not consider Onanism to be ok. Every sperm is sacred. link
