I read Last Light recently and thought it was awesome and terrifying.

You can't put it down. There are several tidbits that are really perceptive, like the husband who went into a psychological black hole the more time he spent studying peak oil and how his wife thought he was crazy, until...

Very nice effort.

thank you.

It was somewhat autobiographical. You really can get quite down thinking about PO, and how utterly buggered we'd be if we carry on the way we are.

I'm working on the sequel right now...set 10 yrs after the events of LL; a mixture of pretty intense and grim stuff, and strangely, moments of bright optimism

Aside from the subject matter, which I'm sure all of us here are happy to see in a work of fiction, you are a really good writer.

You've read "The Road" by Cormac McCarthy, I assume? You captured a bit of the bleakness and fear that he depicted.

The scene in the mall also reminded me a little of "Dawn of the Dead" (the original), even though your book didn't have zombies.

I just got my copy back from a friend. He had lent it to a friend who lent it to... you get the idea.

It is a great book to lend to those who think you are crazy to talk about peak oil so much.

I think I'll lend it to my sister. She always gives me a hard time about it.

thanks for passing it around.

Point of interest....a UK film/TV production company have optioned the rights to Last Light. I for one would love to see a primetime movie on television with the subject of PO in the starring role. (Preferably my book....but any other tale on the subject would do)

Can you imagine the conversations around the watercooler the next day at work?

That's great! I would love to see it as a movie or TV series!

It's still the best peak oil fiction I've read.

A ripping yarn as you Brits would say.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('BigTex', 'I')'m glad this thread got bumped. I hadn't seen it before.

For anyone who has read both books, please compare Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" to "Last Light."

How about an electronic download for about $10?

I have been getting a lot of books this way lately and it seems like a win/win.

Hey, Alex! I really want to read your book, but it looks like I can't get it here in Mexico. (it's really, really expensive for us)
I think the idea of an electronic download would be amazing for those of us who can't get the book any other way.

I found his book on Amazon. It was a bit hard to get, but I think it's easier now.

You can read it on Kindle I think too:

If there's a sequel it would be a great series.

I just read Parable of the Sower and had to get the Parable of the Talents by Octavia Butler.

I couldn't put them down.

I don't think my publisher has made Last Light available for the kindle yet...or for any e-format. Personally I would love to make available a digital copy for people to pass around/duplicate. PO is too important to be getting defensive about losing book sales.

FYI...I'm well into writing the sequel. It takes place 10 yrs after the oil crash, same characters...older, wiser. Quite sobering stuff.

Hey Alex, a digital copy would be fantastic! If you're ever able to do so, please let me know; I'm dying to read your book!

The sequel should be interesting. Is it set in one place, or will it have converging plot lines like Last Light?

I just read Octavia Butler's Parable of the Sower, and it's sequel, Parable of the Talents. It could be similar. The Parable of the Talents takes off where the sower leaves off. It is about 10 years after the crash as well.

The sequel to Last Light will be eagerly anticipated.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('killJOY', '
')Since when do "novels" require "trailers"?

When the "novel" is a dead form, that's when.

Novels are now just wannabe screenplays.

I like reading a good novel. I agree that I'm a dinosaur of a byegone era, but I think that you live in a book much more than you do in a movie. Your brain has to work harder to make mental pictures of things, so you are more involved in a book.

Try those books Parable of the Sower and the Talents. Tell me you don't get into the world they present.

Last Light was a complete thrill ride.

I got into reading a long time ago.

Unfortunately not many people are into it now.

I think the written form of story telling will always have a place, but it's the delivery mechanism (book, e-book, audiobook) that will evolve.

There is much less reading going on these days though...and I think that's because it's much harder to fit a book into one's ordinary schedule. Too many distractions, too much to do, too much back ground noise and flashy lights.

However, I suspect with the current reccession, more book-reading will be going on as it is by far the best value for money for your entertainment-buck.

How is the sequel coming? I can't wait to read it. Is Last Light being made into a movie? It could be timely. Life imitates art, so to speak!
