I'm listening to the interview. Crumb is such a mensch. Thanks for posting this. Sounds like he just wants to talk about music. The only comix creator I would put in his league is Gary Larsen.

Bill Watterson and Charles Schultz are not far behind, but they are a little too cute. Watterson is very talented with the pen. Note how Calvin's eyebrows are at the top of his forehead. A minor detail, but very funny.

Crumb is a great fan of the 19th c. German artist and poet Wilhelm Busch--the inventor of the comic strip. Busch's work is full of violence and frustrated sexuality. There's an anthology of Busch's best work titled "The Genius of Wilhelm Busch: Comedy of Frustration" which I highly recommend. Also a museum dedicated to Busch in Hanover.

www.expatica.com has a good article on Busch dated 9 01 2008.

De Nada. I was hoping there would be somebody on this board old enough to be interested.

For my buck, no one beats Breathed at his best (which was, alas, back in the 80's).

Was this one on the money or what?...

Yup.. It did eventually turn up on UK TV a few years ago. Compared to the rest of his family R.Crumb looks sane. Think his wife is great. He did eventually find his prefect woman.

You know, the more I think about it, Gary Larsen is the bomb! Better than Crumb, even. Look at the eyes on those demons, hysterical.

Two Larsen screamers I still have tacked to my kitchen wall after more than 20 years: "In God's Kitchen" God pulls a pan containing planet Earth out of oven; thought balloon says: "I think this thing's only half baked." (Box of "Earthquik" sits on counter.)
"In the Garden" Adam and Eve stroll through Eden with numerous animals sitting in trees hawking various fruits: Snake says:"Apples apples apples-you want 'em I got 'em."
Hilarious.

As far as I am concerned Crumb is just a weirdo, and I think that is a badge he wears with honor. He is not necessarily trying to be funny with his cartoons, and of the cartoons of his I have seen they really seem to be an acquired taste, by that I mean they suck.

Larson on the other hand is truly funny.

The main charm of Crumb is his indisputable talent at drawing. Other than that you have to drop a lot of acid to appreciate it. Plumbs the depths and says things no one else dares to, or cares to.

Not sure how Crumb handled the charges of blatant racism. Maybe that's why he moved to France. Too many brothers threatening to cap his scrawny ass. Of course the whole point of the R. Crumb thing was to plumb the depths of neurosis. Some folks just don't get it. The interchange between Flakey Foont and Mr. Natural was brilliant. Taught me many a lesson about how to seem clever. . .
