')I'd also like to add that you dont need to personally use a gun...As long as you have friends with guns ^ ^. well rounded community is the key. food, shelter, security, health, leadership.
At least there is one person here who holds a similar viewpoint to my own. I don't think the Macho Man-In Your Face Approach Cash favors is all that great, its too isolationist, too individualistic, and mostly too downright ANNOYING. I could only wonder about Cash's perceptions of how everyone else reacted to his throttling by physical presence of the Metrodude he towered over. Such folks ARE handy to have around as fighters, this is why we make them Marines. However, most Marines make poor leaders, they are so enomored of the idea of force as the answer to all questions they never try a little diplomacy. It works you know. Cash is like a Doberman you pull out if you need to threaten people, but overall you gotta keep people like this on a leash, they are too unstable in a community
While I was a reasonably tough kid in the neighborhood I grew up in NYC, I sure was not the biggest boy on the block or in the playgrounds, and if I had used my fists to try to get what I thought was fair play I would have been pummelled to dogmeat by bigger and stupider boys. Rather what I did was to make sure I had FRIENDS who were Big Boys

On the playgrounds of NYC in my day, if you had no friends, you were TOAST. Really BIG BOYS who thought they could force their will on people succeeded if they picked on loners, but they never succeeded with me. I NEVER threw a punch in the playground, but I about always got my way. Because I learned about how to MAKE FRIENDS. I picked some friends who were smart, some who were strong, some who were pretty, some who were rich, some who were poor. Weak and stupid people are not good choices for friends, poor folks often are because they are prepared to struggle. Rich folks usually aren't prepared for that, but the MONEY makes them worthwhile friends sometimes. Pretty girls are always good to have around, they enhance your status.
As we proceed into the darkness, count up your friends and their talents and abilities. They probably won't believe you if you go into depressing tirades about Peak Oil, don't bother with doing that to a great extent right now. Just plant seeds in their heads about having some reserve food, having some tools and having some weapons. When TSHTF, you will know it, and so will they. Get them together as fast as you can, and have a Plan Ready. The more people you can bring together and the quicker you can do it, the better your chances for survival. If you hole up in your city condo you are almost certainly gonna be toast.
For the city dweller who currently cannot move to a rural area, my main plan would be for how to Bug Out really fast and as well prepared as possible. Have your SUV always filled with gas, and 2 or 3 10 Gallon containers as well. Be able to drive for at least 300 miles as far into the boonies as you can in a given location with no need for gas refills at empty gas stations, this varies of course depending on where you are. Have a couple of good house-size tents, have plenty of dried foods, have axes and saws and hammers and nails. Have as many Guns and Bows and Snares and as many books on finding wild foods as you can buy. Load it all in a trailer with a lock on it in your garage, and tell no one about it. Pick your location to Bug Out to well, start researching it now on Camping Trips. Locate the geographic coordinates with a GPS. When TSHTF, you tell your friends, "This is where we meet up. Bring all the food you can carry and anything useful you have. WE can't survive in the City. This is where we make our Last Stand." Then you Bug Out and hope they follow, because if they don't you are just gonna survive a little while, though probably longer than they do. If they are smart, if they are good friends they will find a way to get to your Coordinates, even if its on foot or by bike.
Is it as good a plan as some who have spent tens of thousands of dollars on setting up their farms off the grid? Maybe not, but its still a PLAN, and it takes away the feelings of Panic if you have a Plan to GET OUT. After that, you deal with the reality of trying to make the plan work long term. Cross that bridge when it comes.
