might be old news to many here, but did ya read: The Next Bubble: Priming the markets for tomorrow’s big crash Bubble

which describes Eric Janszen thesis that the next bubble is going to be in alternative energy. Kinda like this trend of reasoning because alt energy and alt transportation (i.e. electric cars), address two big issues "global warming" and the "peak oil" (i.e. the liquid fuels problem)
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Heineken', 'W')hy not? Another round of the party! People were heading out the door, but now they're pausing, lured by the siren song of lower commodities prices and MORE FUN. For example, why not come on down to the car dealership and take a gander. SUVs have never been so cheap! The old girl, Ma Earth, has a few more turns in her, n'est c'est pas? Let's see just how much more juice we can squeeze outta her.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Heineken', 'T')he System is as resilient as it is evil. It will pull out all stops to keep the party going. It has deep pockets, fantastic connections, and endless charm. It controls everything, most importantly the media and therefore the public mind.
In "Inside the Third Reich," Hitler's former armaments minister, Albert Speer, describes how he was able to keep the economy of Germany functioning deep into the autumn of 1944, even though most of the country's infrastructure had been bombed to smithereens. The country was still producing enough ammunition, tanks, artillery pieces, etc., to inflict the greatest casualties ever inflicted on the US in a single battle (the Battle of the Bulge). The German people were still eating and still clothed, although there was considerable hardship too.

slave labor. the germans worked thousands of poor soviet, polish, etc. POWs, along w/other 'undesirables' to death. they had it all worked out, not enough food to survive, just enough calories to get x amount of work done on the way to your grave by starvation.

my intention was to show that your german analogy doesn't work. but having written this, i now see that my reply actually supports your main point.

Yes, even today the capitalist system depends heavily on what amounts to slave labor.

With the latest round of inflation, minimum wage eminently qualifies as "slave labor." Cheaper, maybe, since to have to provide enough food, medical care, clothes and squalid living conditions to allow your slaves to work, a slaveowner would probably spend more, including his overseer overhead. Now, government-provided social benefits and charities provide many of the costs to sustain the "workers", and when a "worker" (instead of a slave) dies, the employer has no liability to even bury it.

And the "worker" says "Thank you for giving me a job!"
