$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jbrovont', 'A')ctually I've been aware of Georgia for a while. It's existed for a while...since, oh, about 1921 or so. :) It also made the news a few times during the dissolution of the USSR in 1991, and again several times in the last few years from it's desire to join NATO, and involvement in Iraq, regular spats with Russia proper, strategic connection to the pipeline project Israel is so interested in (featured in The World is Not Enough)...bla bla bla

I think I made my point.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Specop_007', '
')Such a compelling argument.....

You DO realize we barely knew Georgia existed until all this hoo-ray happened.

But I dont want to ruin your fantasy of hating America.

I should clarify that.

PO.com is much like any other forum, or even real life for that matter. You have a large collection of people. A few are truly smart and well respected. Others will debate their positions with people based on what they know and support the claims they make. Sometimes they are right, sometimes they are not.

Then the rest are, frankly, fucking idiots. When pressed on ANY issue they immediately ignore it and throw out baseless personal attacks. Things like "Dont waste your time" and "Your just a <insert political party name>" because they are incapable of a rational, reasonable response. Most likely because they dont understand the subject at hand and better to look an asshole then be known a fool I suppose.

Yes some know about Georgia and its history. They represent people who dont live in ignorance and listen and watch whats going on in the world around them. You would be one of those people. A good many are not.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'South Ossetia under Russia and the Soviet Union

The modern-day South Ossetia was annexed by Russia in 1801, along with Georgia proper, and absorbed into the Russian Empire. Following the Russian Revolution, South Ossetia became a part of the Menshevik Georgian Democratic Republic, while the north became a part of the Terek Soviet Republic. The area saw a series of Ossetian rebellions during which claims for independence were made. The Georgian government accused Ossetians of cooperating with Bolsheviks. According to Ossetian sources about 5,000 Ossetians were killed and more than 13,000 subsequently died from hunger and epidemics.[17]

The Soviet Georgian government established by the Russian 11th Red Army in 1921 created the South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast (i.e., district) in April 1922. Although the Ossetians had their own language (Ossetian), Russian and Georgian were administrative/state languages.[18] Under the rule of Georgia's government during Soviet times, it enjoyed some degree of autonomy including speaking the Ossetian language and teaching it in schools.[18]

The tensions in the region began to rise amid the rising nationalism among both Georgians and Ossetians in 1989. Before this, the two communities of the South Ossetian Autonomous Oblast of Georgian SSR had been living in peace with each other except for the 1918-1920 events. Both ethnicities have had a high level of interaction and high rates of intermarriages.')

This is a mess that was hatched by Stalin (Georgian) and not only with Ossetia. Same was done for instance with Armenia.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_code('', 'Armenia in the Soviet Union (1922-1991)

Main article: Armenian SSR

The Transcaucasian SFSR was dissolved in 1936 and as a result Armenia became a constituent republic of the Soviet Union as the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic. The transition to communism was difficult for Armenia, and for most of the other republics in the Soviet Union. The Soviet authorities placed Armenians under strict surveillance. There was almost no freedom of speech, even less so under Joseph Stalin. Any individual who was suspected of using or introducing nationalist rhetoric or elements in their works were labeled traitors or propangandists, and were sent to Siberia during Stalinist rule. Even Zabel Yessayan, a writer who was fortunate enough to escape from ethnic cleansing during the Armenian Genocide, was quickly exiled to Siberia after repatriating to Armenia from France.

Soviet Armenia participated in World War II by sending hundreds of thousands of soldiers to the frontline in order to defend the "Soviet motherland." Soviet rule also had some positive aspects. Armenia, a nation that was under foreign domination for hundreds of years, and was not ready for statehood in between hostile Turkish neighbors, was kept under control and put under Soviet protection from Kemalist Turkey, thanks to the Iron Curtain. Armenia also greatly benefitted from the Soviet economy, especially when it was at its apex. Provincial villages gradually became towns and towns gradually became cities. Peace between Armenia and Azerbaijan was reached, albeit temporarily. During this time, Armenia had a sizeable Azeri minority, mostly centred in Yerevan. Likewise, Azerbaijan had an Armenian minority, concentrated in Baku, Kirovabad, and Nagorno-Karabakh. This demographic would change dramatically during and after the Nagorno-Karabakh war.')

Read closely the last sentence in the above. That is how large nations play ball. Divide and conquer. :-)

Once divided it is a devil of a trick to try to put things back together. Remember Yugoslavia? Most who lived in the Yugoslavia days will say it was the most peaceful time this area had know in a long time.

Delve deeper into world history to get these details to explain what the heck is going on instead of this silly bickering.

PS: Nagorno-Karabakh War - It might be instructive to look at what this was all about and how it ended.

Actually, the Georgians are an ancient people that existed prior to the Ottomons and prior to Byzantium.

They adopted Christianity in the 4th century.

They can be traced back to ancient Colchis, visited by Jason and the Argonauts ca. 3000 years ago.

Once again you underestimated the power of the dark side of the force!

"Russians were told over breakfast yesterday what really happened in Georgia: the conflict in South Ossetia was part of a plot by Dick Cheney, the Vice-President, to stop Barak Obama being elected president of the United States. "
