Through the toronto star while waiting at the grocery store, there was a small article about the end of suberbia documentary on vision tv (which was on last wednesday, march 9). When I looked for more information online I stumbled upon lifeaftertheoilcrash.com and eventually this site.

Originally I started posting on the rage3d forums thinking people would be just as alarmed as me but what I got was oil supply will never end, we'll just switch to alternatives, there is no problem bullshit. Of course the're getting these ideas from places like this
BBC article which has statements like "The good news is that there is plenty of oil and gas in the ground to meet demand. "The Earth's energy resources are more than adequate to meet demand until 2030 and well beyond," the report says."

I went from pessimistic to optimistic and am slowly going back to pessimistic as I realize that the media is basically encouraging people to continue thier high energy consumption lifestyles and that when we pass the peak everything will crash hard.
Well thats my first post.

Welcome

Yeah, the pessism then optimism (then realization that the media is telling us crap), then pessism. Or maybe it's realism. Whatever it is, a BIG depression might be coming our way soon. Everything is made out of oil it seems... :-(

Something is seriously wrong with American TV News (and TV shows in general - I don't understand how anyone can watch 50 percent of the shows on TV). Ah well, welcome to the board.. Sometimes I wish that everybody would just 'wake up'. And everybody could live and work for a better tomorrow.. then I come back to reality realizing that two guys in my elevator were talking about how they passed out in the middle of a party and how a buddy went to the hospital (for alcohol poisoning).

I'm not some kind of super-nerd, nor do I have anything against alcohol (I imbibe it once every two months). But, damn it. I know my limits; you can feel your limits if you don't take 14 shots in twenty minutes...

That won't cheer him up.

Here:

There are many ways to get oil. We're running out of light sweet crude.
There's still:
Sour oil
Tar sand
Shale oil
Coal that can be changed into oil
Palm oil, veggie oil and other natural oils

Now that won't stop the peak, but no way is oil production gonna hit 0.
Even if it is, it won't be anytime soon.

Plus, any kind of energy growth provides more wealth.
Solar power and wind power are still in children's shoes and have the potential to became the world's biggest energy sources and these days solar power is rapidly getting cheaper and there have been many breakthroughs in solar power technology lately that enables it to became the cheapest energy source by 2010.

Welcome, FireJack. You've come to the right place!

Keep abreast of news here--the Current Events and Geopolitics boards are very informative. There's an excellent board on how to prepare for what's coming, too! You've read the Basics board? Good place to go.

Other good sites:
climateark.org
EnergyBulletin.net
fromthewilderness.com

Of course, visit the APSO site and Matt Simmons' site.

Just keep coming back. We aim to get through this together, if we can!

I have have looked (but not actually completely read) dieoff.org, from the wilderness, etc. I have read a lot about what Matt Simmons has to say and intend to buy his new book when it comes out.

The reason I have become pessimistic is that people seem intent on ignoring the issue, even at a $100 I bet people will still be saying its all politics and that opec is just holding back etc. I just hope people don't destoy what little is left of the environment just to survive. OF cource once the environment is gone the humans will die and the earth will return to the green place it was, until the sun goes supernova anyway.

I could not agree with you more.

American televison is all about sex, agression, fear (misguided), and consumption. I don't have to explain much since all of you can just turn on the idiot box and see there things for yourself.

There is also a disturbing trend on television which follows very closely to the Roman empire right before it fell. Ordinary people are celebrated and the extraordinary are marginalized. Notice how reality TV has been the craze since 2000ish?

TV's primary function is to act as a distraction so the walking dead can go run their rat race and think about happy thoughts watching some program in a catatonic state. I mean the nation has major news develop daily on issues that impact all of our lives. Case in point, the arctic reserve drilling which was green lighted in congress.

I can say w/o a doubt that the news media (even the 24/7 news outlets) maybe did a blurb on this and spent much more time on Michael Jackson, Robert Blake, and Scott Peterson.

Stupid people are very easy to control and brainwash so I can see why things are the way they are.

Happy endings

Unread postby Michael_Layden » Thu 17 Mar 2005, 09:06:08

I actually don't believe its the sex, violence etc on TV and movies that is the real problem. Its
1 Happy endings.
Virtually every movie etc you see has the "hero/heroine" winning in the end. This is very much the BS from cultures which have always succeeded. I have UK/ US friends saying to me that Irish Films often are incredibly black and depressing. (Thats changing we are seeing ourselves as winners now) So I think to actually be worried about the future we really have to get beyond out dumb believe in happy endings. There is nothing that causes me so much Pestiimism as Optimism.

2. The cult of Individualism.
So much of TV, Soaps, advertising , News etc is aimed at persuading us that we are on our own and we have to look out for number 1. Unfortunately if you don't give a toss for anyone but yourself its hard to conceive that you might have to make sacrifices for others. Marketers have needed to strip everything that is noble in us so that we will believe a car or clothes etc will make us a worthwhile human being. Now to tell them that they will have to get rid of their car !!! How are they going to feel like a stud now.

You guys in the USA need to watch PBS more. :-) Frontline, NOVA, etc. There is good stuff out there. I saw a fantastic documentary about population on NOVA this week. Extraordinary TV!

Welcome to the fold FireJack. Expect lots of ups and downs from now on. It will impact your relationships. Find a friend or family member to confide in who sees the reality of the situation. You might need to go through a few deniers. Also, if your health insurance pays for it, get professional mental help. It doesn't really help anything but at least you can talk to someone who will listen.

Oh, and take anything from Michael Ruppert with a grain of salt. The guy's a wacked out megalomaniac kook. Kind of a mad genius.

I havn't really paid attention to michael ruppert much, I think matt simmons has a better idea of what going on. Most predicitons about what will happen once oil stocks begin to decline are probably wrong, since it's impossible to factor in everything.
I'm just glad I don't live in the US.

TV's primary function is to sell stuff, to be honest. All of the other crap that's on in just filler between commercials, to lure eyeballs to the screen.

I do agree that TV is becoming much more 'bread & circuses' to keep the average American (at least) mollified and compliant. I try to watch as little of it as possible.

I haven't owned a television for years, and I don't miss it ... much. OK, maybe I miss the movies, but I can always hire them if I reeeealy want to see them (and I do, occasssionally). Radio National (Australia) and the internet are enough to keep me informed.

Welcome FireJack.
Kind regards, Katkinkate

getting people to understand

Unread postby Jake_old » Fri 18 Mar 2005, 07:04:43

I have all but given up trying to make people understand the issue, I end up being considered a 'wacked out kook'. If others make a comment about PO then I try to inform, otherwise I selfishly stay away from the subject.

I'm very pessimistic about the future but not to the extent that some people post here, I hardly post but enjoy the intelligent discussion.

I like Michael Ruppert, but to totally trust what he says would take a lifetime of research, he exaggerated what Zbig said in The Grand Chessboard but that was it, an exageration, not a blatant lie I'm talking about the elite referring to us as barbarians and also the amount of times Pearl Harbour is mentioned.

I agree that he just wants the truth, and in trying to persuade others he uses tactics employed by the mainstream.
