Synesthesia

Unread postby NEOPO » Wed 22 Aug 2007, 15:10:05

Synesthesia Wiki entry

I did not know this had a name until today yet I have always been aware that I indeed experience this.

IMO It does not seem to be a bad thing and if there was a fix I doubt I would desire to be "fixed".

Anyways I thought it was interesting and that I would share.

I've got the rare visual/aural synesthesia. Movement (especially repeated patterns of movement) makes "noise" in my head. Things like animated gifs, drive me crazy because of the sound they make.

Who knows what effect this has had on my musical career and tendency to explore mixtures of found/improvised sounds.

I have experienced this as well, and did not know the phenomenon had a name. I could cite several examples, but the one that first came to my mind was this: The number 2 is the color blue and the number three is red, so when I think of blue and red together, I think of the number 5. Sometimes the number 5 seems to be blue also, and sometimes brown. The other numbers have colors too, in my mind, and sometimes letters as well.

In reading the wiki article, I realize I experience all of the different versions, except for the lexical-gustatory form.

Interesting. Seems like being the 'opposite' of a sociopath!

I've been fascinated by synesthesia since reading about it back in the 80s when I was working on my b.s. in psychology. Always been a little envious too, since I've never experienced it. Seemed it might make your world a much more interesting place than the one the rest of us experience.

Another thing I've alway wondered is whether it might be related to or a sort of ancestor to our ability to use metaphor and simile.

Yeah, if anything I would say it is a gift and may have a much deeper meaning and use then first meets the eye.

I am wondering if my own experiences are consistant. Do mondays always seem blue or do they change to blue green etc etc...

Does the number 4 always seem red or perhaps it changes from red to brown or pink.

Does the word Fascism always feel cold or perhaps on some days it makes me feel warm etc etc.

Yep, surprised to find it has a name as well.

Wow, that is fascinating, you must have a noisy head. What do you hear when you see a large flock of birds flying around, for example?

I have the grapheme-color type, but as I've aged, it seems to have faded somewhat.

For me:

1=Red
2=Yellow
3=Green
4=Brown
5=Blue
6=Pink
7=Black

And the number 147 makes my spine all tingly...

heh heh. I don't have this condition and numbers don't equal colors to me. But I do prefer 153.

Um...not really. What do you think a sociopath/psychopath is? The opposite of a sociopath is a highly empathic individual.

Psychopathy/empathy is about emotional response and conscience or lack thereof, not the senses. Nothing to do with the sensory mix up of synesthesia.

Synesthesia seems to be the bleeding across of sensory data from one channel into another where it shouldn't be. Current leak due to bad insulation if you like.

(I don't often post, but would have a go at this one...)

1=gray to black
2=yellow
3=green
4=blue
5=gray/green (indeed, sort of a mix of 2 and 3)
6=brown
7=beige (yellowish-brown with a bit of orange)
8=red
9=orange
10=black and white

a=red
e=yellow
i=white
o=dark
u=light gray

Consonants seem to have a much less pronounced colour, just all shades of the same dull greyish yellow.

I remember numbers and words from their color combinations.
If I'm looking e.g. for somebody's name I just can't put my finger on, I sometimes say 'I know it has a red/white colour with some dark in it', meaning that it has at least an 'a', an 'i' and an 'o'.

I always thought it had something to do with the colours of the letters in the books I used when I learned reading.... Only later I found out about synesthesia.

Intriguing subject

PS sometimes it can be very confusing, e.g. 8 is coloured red, wich fits with the Dutch word for it (acht) also having an 'a', which is also red; but the word 'black' is also strongly coloured red, because it's only vowel is an 'a', which is red...

Just thought I could share (no idea what this has to do with Peak Oil, though...)

I have synesthesia also, as does one of my sons. I have some name/color things (Thursday is rust-colored to me, for example) as well as certain kinds of touch --> color, but I also see the months in my mind as if on a clock. Makes it easy to tell how far different months are from each other.

I'm very visual/spatial which I guess is unusual for a woman, can do math in my head by seeing it just as if I wrote it down.

Oliver Sack's "Musicophilia" talks about people who assign colors to tones: A is yellow, B is green, etc.

I find it fascinating.

I don't have a bit of this, even though I'm artsy-fartsy.

I'm jealous of people who experience synesthesia.
