There is a maximum limit vehicles can travel, regardless of the economy.

If oil would be $1 a barel for the next 100 years, that graph would still peak at some point.

Wait until the "foward looking" states have their turn at us. Taxing by VMT is going to be debated in several states as a way to "eliminate global climate change" In fact all they are worried about is falling revenues. A speople switch to higher mileage vehicles, states have to fill the deficit some way. Hold on to your wallets.
