DHS: Your [s]Papers[/s] Laptop, Please
Travelers’ laptops may be detained at border
Under DHS policy, no suspicion of wrongdoing needed to search devices Thurs., July. 31, 2008
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')ASHINGTON - Federal agents may take a traveler's laptop or other electronic device to an off-site location for an unspecified period of time without any suspicion of wrongdoing, as part of border search policies the Department of Homeland Security recently disclosed.
Also, officials may share copies of the laptop's contents with other agencies and private entities for language translation, data decryption or other reasons, according to the policies, dated July 16 and issued by two DHS agencies, U.S. Customs and Border Protection and U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement. …

Encrypted drives. Hidden volumes. Clean laptop with data on the internet.. There are many ways around this fascist border patrol even though it is sad that we have to resort to stuff like that.

If they want your data they will get it.

This is in direct violation of the 4th amendment but I guess the Constitution is just a piece of paper...

I do not cross borders nor do I fly the best way is to swap out the hard drive before traveling so they can't get a copy of Mark Twain which you are commenting on for english class, It would be cheating to give them your copy!

And before traveling, take yourfriends cell phone instead of yours.

HHHmmm. Makes you wonder how long it will be until this rule goes into effect when crossing state borders.

That's why you boot off a CD. Who travels with magnetic storage these days? You lose custody of it once, you toss it. Cheaper to write a CD.

You people could not begin to comprehend how foolish you all are with your encryption and wiping crap. I have tested wiping out with my own hard drives, I did 27 passes and was still able to recover data, and with the right equipment, there are no current algorithms that the us government couldn't with a little time could not recover.

The best way, is to make sure your laptop has a solid state drive and when you are not using your computer than that drive should be on your person. Then if the police try to frisk you, you can physically destroy the drive by using a really good grip and crumpling it, or breaking free and smashing the HD against the ground.

Don't laught too much about what jasonraymondson said, myself i have put some time to think about this and at the end, i ended with EXACTLY the same conclusion.

Solid state hard drive you can carry when not in use in the computer and the means to destroy it "just in case".

It is not so paranoid as many could think. In the middle ages, the kind of books you had in you possession could help the inquisition to put you at the end of a rope or worst, tied on a pile of wood (with a few of your own books in the pile) and burned alive..after suffering torture.

Today, what do you think is the FIRST thing the agents of the State are doing when they want to get a grip on someone? They get a warrant and take the computer/laptop...

Nowadays, there is so many things made illegals that you could end up in jail for anything! Heck, even owning a few mp3's or divx movies are now a criminal act in Canada and with the good tools, someone can know if you had files 6 months ago 8O!

I let you imagine how much things they can dig in a hard drive and use against you..

So..in the past..it was books, today as well but computers have make the job so much easier for the inquisitors and you never know what kind of knowledge you might be "banned" to have by the governments of this world.

Any cryptography software that uses a key larger than 56 bits is illegal to export, and is considered a "dual-use" item, and even a "munition" by the Wassenaar agreement.

Also of interest:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')ML22. "Technology" as follows:
a. "Technology", other than specified in ML22.b, which is "required" for the
"development", "production" or "use" of items specified by the Munitions List;

It's so open ended that I think they could say a mouse or a paperclip was a restricted item if they wanted to. Back to encryption though, I'm not sure if it's legal to trade keys for encrypted files over borders or not - something we probably should look into since many members of this board hail from different nationalities. There was a bill being pushed in 1996 I think, called the "Secure Public Networks Act" (sounds innocuous right?) that would require a back door in any encryption software for the government to use at leisure, but I'm not sure what happened with that. I do remember McCain was pushing for it, and Ashcroft was against it saying it violated personal rights. Kind of ironic considering the last few years.

Encryption is one thing, but if crossing borders the best move is not to store information at all. No-one can do much if there is no HDD and the OS is in a mailbox.

Even if you use a removable usb, doesnt the hard drive also store TEMP files and cache information?

For this pupose, to scrub any information from the caches and hard drives, a Type-3 Antipersonnel/Antimateriel Incendiary Grenade[1], colloquially known as the thermite canister, or "Firebomb", the "Molotov" or the "flame grenade", is a Jiralhanae (Brute) grenade.. It is a multipurposed infantry explosives munition, and can be thrown 10 meters (32.8 feet) by the average soldier.

With proper license, the incendiary grenade could be placed on the laptop, and the pin pulled, ,making sure the thermite canister sits above the hard drive.

When the keyboard dissolves, the molten steel will fuse the hard drive into a slag heap making it more difficult to extract data.

This should be done with proper fire extinguisher nearby.

Don't breath the smoke and use eye protection.

The gold from the motherboard can then be collected and scavenged.

Hahaha, i like the idea :-D ! Kind of hardcore, but seem to be effective 8O .. But..If you're working with a USB drive, then you could build a self contained thermite device in a clay pot  !!!

Remember that is not only laptops; hard drives, flash drives, mobile phones, iPods, pagers, beepers, tapes (video and/or audio), as well as books are included.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')ravellers to the U.S. could have their laptops and other electronic devices seized at the airport under new anti-terror measures.
Federal agents have been granted powers to take such devices and hold them as long as they like.
They do not even need grounds to suspect wrongdoing.

New powers: The Department for Homeland Security in the U.S. have been granted powers to seize laptops and other electronic devices at airports under new anti-terror measures

The Department of Homeland Security said the policies applied to anyone entering the country by land, sea or air, including U.S. citizens.

The extent of the new powers, which have been secretly in place for some time, was revealed yesterday in the Washington Post.

They cover hard drives, flash drives, mobile phones, iPods, pagers, beepers, and video and audio tapes, as well as books, pamphlets and other written materials, the report said.

Give up folks and use your memory (that is of course, till you get a brain-scan to see if you you harbor any terrorist information)
