Now they're stealing SEWER GRATES for crying out loud

Is this a sign of things to come?

Missing sewer grates could pose danger to motorists

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')oronto - Police are trying to determine who has been stealing 150-pound sewer grates from Highway 427, leaving dangerous holes along the side of the highway.

The grates are disappearing from the northbound and southbound lanes of the highway, from Burnhamthorpe and Valhalla roads.

Police said the gaping holes could potentially swallow up the wheel of a car and cause a serious crash.

Fourteen lids have been stolen over the past two weekends.

MTO crews have replaced about half of the covers so far and are welding them on so they can't be easily removed again.

Police suggested the lids have become quite popular with thieves because of their value in the scrap metal market.

Officers who patrol the highway have also been alerted and will be watching for any suspicious activity.

It's believed the thieves may be posing as a construction crew and are most likely working at night.

In New Mexico they are stealing man hole covers. The reason seems to be because they contain a high percentage of bronze, i.e., copper, which has a high recylce value.

Easily solved -

Crime for stealing public metal - minimum 1 year in jail.

Crime for accepting public metal at scrap yard from anybody but a public servant authorized to recycle scrap - minimum 10 years in jail.

What?

The scrap yard owner doesn't know that the man hole cover is stolen?

Metal theft is becoming a major problem ... particularly copper theft.

In some developing nations the locals are dismantling electrical power grids for the copper almost as fast as they are being built.

As other metals soar in value the problem will become even worse.

When you look at the potential consequences of these crimes I think that a short jail sentence is letting them off too lightly. Not only are they stealing but they are endangering life.

There are a couple different threads about this aren't there? Maybe we should merge them and start a theft watch thread or something. I know there was one about a guy getting cooked trying to steal from a power transfer station, and one about the man hole covers.

I agree this could become a very serious problem. A thief could potentially knock out power to thousands of people, or in an overloaded grid, cause even more serious damage if they cause the grid to tip over into failure and parts melt down.

In our town some meth heads stole a statue of Sacegawea. They sawed her off at the feet. They were eventually caught BECAUSE the owner of the recycle place called the police, which was "unprecedented" apparently. The theives had cut the statue into chunks and melted corners of the cuttings to try and disguise what it was, but all they did was vandalize it more. It was abeautiful piece, who knows if and when it can be replaced.

Maybe we should give the crooks good time off for stealing some of the rusty wrecks which seem to be everwhere. Clean up the neighborhood some.

No motivation. It's mainly copper/copper alloys they're after, and cars are mostly aluminum, plastic and maybe some steel and iron.

What do you mean "now"? This was the first stuff to start getting stolen - years ago. "Now" they are bringing cutting equipment. :-x

The solution in this case is a steel honeycomb tray filled with concrete. Very common over here. Not worth the trouble.

Looks like the perp was one of the Chinese working in the tar sands... so it is ironically related to Peak Oil.

As a Canadian I use to swallow all that anti-gun propaganda by the neo-commies but frankly even you liberals would agree one good C.C.W. holder on that bus appropriately equiped with a .45 would have dispatched Mr. Li without extravagant expenses for the taxpayer in legal mumbo jumbo and "psychiatric" care an ordinary citizen cannot even dream of.

Guns in the hands of properly trained law abiding citizens represent safety, not the Wild wild wild wild super-wild west.

Canadian Supreme Court stop watching westerns (incidentally the West was much safer than cities like Boston or New York in the 19th century) and understand a gun is just a metallic tube propelling a tiny lead charge at generally subsonic speeds.

But Canada will probably be saved from the pussyfication of its populace as what happened in England thanks to integration with the US soon...

True... although .45 are relatively slow but latest studies show a slow heavy bullet has better stopping power than a fast light one.

Funniest part is how the RCMP called the behavior of the passenger heroic... explain to me how 35 fleeing 1 who is just armed with a knife and then waiting 1/2 hr patiently outside while the perp tries to drive away with the bus is "heroic"?

Of course the reaction of the media was to consider a registrar... of knives!!!!

Why not forks, leg tables, shoes (kicking action...).

Anyhow... for Peak Oil implications it shows most people have been comforted in cheap energy intensive living for too long to even consider react when the boogeyman of starvation, disease and better armed intruders shows up.

The US is getting ready by waging a formative war that teaches some of its youth how to deal with armed slums, but most of Canada and Europe are helpless in the face of rising crime and social disorder.

People will just huddle up in their houses and await to be slaughtered like lambs by those who will steal from them their riches and resources...

Now when we are talking about it, are fully automatic weapons like submachineguns, assault rifles, battle rifles or even machineguns legal in any US states? :)

I usually bash the US but I do love the country, I really do. Your gun and self defence legislation is so much better than what we have in Europe. Even if per capita gun ownership is greater in Sweden than in the US. Not to mention Finland...

Yes and no.
At the Federal level ownership of anything beyond semi auto requires a permit. For example, if you want a full auto weapon you need to submit a form to the ATF (Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives) along with $200. You then wait for approval as they run a background check on you.

At the State level however it varies. Some states forbid the ownership of full auto weapons, some allow it. So federally yes, you can own these things. However it varies by state.

Things that fall under the NFA act are suppressors, full auto, big bore, destructive devices and Any Other Weapon. Actually I think big bore is considered a DD though.

The problem is not so much the licensing but cost of the weapon. The act of 86 (Name eludes me now) froze the supply of full auto weapons. That means no full auto weapon made after 1986 is eligible for transfer to a private citizen. Additionally, no weapon prior to that is eligible if it wasnt already in circulation. Basically, once the law was passed in 1986 what was available was it. So now you have a huge demand for full auto weapons and a very tight supply.

My AR15 was $900. A full auto version (M16) would run you $12-$16,000 depending. The cheapest full auto is going to set you back around 3-4,000. Then you get into the real cream de la cream like the old German stuff (MG42, BAR) and you can go 30-60,000. Then the icing on top with chainguns (gatling guns) of which I believe there are only 7 in existence as privately transferable which are 250-400,000 or more.

It boils down to you can spend about as much as you want on a gun. God bless America!

Some misconceptions here:
1) US has 9 firearm for 10 people.. and is on paper the most heavily armed country in the world, although a small proportion of the population will have multiple weapons.

2) I think 20-30% of those are firearms.

3) Assault weapons, silencers, bullet proof vests and machine guns are forbidden except if manufactured before 1986 for machine guns and if the purchaser has a specific federal license. Local laws supercede federal requirement... good luck navigating that maze!

In all cases the process of acquiring a firearm legally will result in the dealer and the State knowing more about you than you ever known about yourself. It is a highly intimate non-erotic procedure.

States like Cali are almost European-like in their liberal hatred of letting people defend themselves, whereas Vermont will let you carry with only a driver license.

Meanwhile... your average common criminal will have no trouble getting a decent gun to commit a crime, from Antigua to England to Russia and pretty much anywhere in the world except Antarctica.
