Bennigan's Restaurants Shut Down Nationwide

Postby cudabachi » Wed 30 Jul 2008, 08:44:30

A sign of what's to come? link
Customers showing up for lunch at Bennigan's restaurants in Chicago and across the country found quite a surprise Tuesday morning, when all the corporate-owned locations had signs on display reading "closed for business."

Bennigan's Grill and Tavern closed all of its corporate-owned locations nationwide after filing for bankruptcy. That amounts to 160 locations, and about 10,000 employees are out of work. Independent franchises remain open for business as usual.

Chicago and the suburbs will be hit hard. Fifteen Bennigan's in the area did not open for business for Tuesday, now that the company is being liquidated in bankruptcy court.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('cudabachi', 'A') sign of what's to come?

No, proof of what's happening now.
Steak & Ale has declared bankruptcy, too.

They're owned by the same parent company and yes, they're going down too.

It's all crappy quality restaurant chains anyway. I can't wait til we have to grow everything locally and we lose all the "me too" chains in favor of high quality mom and pop restaurants. Look at San Francisco, they thrive on small business with unique restaurants and shops abound.

Great advice. I keep telling people - you can't survive on a garden of cucumbers and tomatoes. Think calories.

i think people are mistaking demand destruction in the US (with regards to oil) for simply the economy melting down due to being completely looted by the bankers, housing market etc. Of course the price of oil just adds to the pain.

Hahaha!

I had the exact same thought. It's weird because I watched Office Space about a week before this happened.

Exactly! I just absolutely love that movie for shouting out the truth about corporate stupidity...and that "15 pieces of flair" rule really takes the cake. She was following the rules, but the boss said it wasn't enough. "How many is enough?" she asks. "15 is the minimum, but you should wear more." "But how many more?" she asks. And on it goes...as if the boss actually has the idea that he can instill some sense of pride and loyalty into a low-level service worker working at a crappy restaurant. LOLOL. Wonders never cease, do they? :P

Hopefully this is the first of a great many dominoes to fall...all those fat corporate pigs are about to be led to slaughter very, very soon...something that I've been eagerly anticipating for a long danged time. :-D

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('dukey', 'i') think people are mistaking demand destruction in the US (with regards to oil) for simply the economy melting down

Hard times or good times, demand destruction is what it is. The converse of what you say is people are mistaking increased oil demand simply due to economic expansion. As a third grader would say, "duh". Some people here are confusing demand destruction with economic substitution. You can drive a little less and still buy your $4 Starbucks latte which is oil demand destruction.... or you can drive the same amount but forgo the latte. That is economic substitution (or Starbucks demand destruction). No doubt both are happening right now. As for the poster rooting for Starbucks to simply go away, well, I doubt the brand disappears but there will be 600 less locations to buy your brew.

Lastly, I am not seeing an economic meltdown. What I see are people buying iPhones, Nintendo systems, fuel efficient cars, landscaping, and all kinds of other items you throw disposable income at. Perhaps I'm seeing the world through rose colored glasses as my state of North Dakota is having nothing short of an economic boom with high crop prices, home prices still rising, and a labor shortage.

For almost a year now, my wife and I have spent about 90% of our dining out money on the nearby mom-and-pop places (usually once a week). I predict you will see a lot more chain locations going out of business in the next 3 years. For me, seeing McDonalds close down a significant number of locations for "cost cutting measures" will be a sure sign that the end is nigh for chain restaurants.

Pretty much. And organs to the south of the stomach.

Food and sex. Pretty much sums it up for me, personally. :)
