Rising gasoline price will devastate many suburb drivers

Postby NevadaGhosts » Tue 15 Mar 2005, 17:04:26

Here are some startling gasoline price figures I came up with doing calculations from this site: fuel economy

I have calculated some different vehicles and some varying gas prices. Then added them together. All vehicles were calculated at driving 20,000 miles per year and 45% highway/55% city driving, which I feel is average for many American suburbanite drivers.

-2005 Dodge Ram 1500 Pickup 2WD V10 average mpg 10
$3,330 per year fuel cost $276 per month fuel cost

I think we can all see how devastating rises in gasoline prices will be for the average American driver. And not to mention most drivers are also making monthly payments on their vehicles.

Also, many American families own 2 SUV's or pick-up trucks for their daily commutes. 8O

I have come up with 20,000 miles per year average due to the fact that many Americans commute from the suburbs 60+ miles one way to work:

120 miles round trip.
500 miles per week.
2,000 miles per month.
24,000 miles per year.

Not all American drivers commute this far, but many do.

I have already identified 3 guys who I work with who live close to me. Our drive to work is about 14 miles each way. We all live within about 2 miles of each other. Easy bike ride for everyone.

I have my carpool team ready. 4 people in the car getting 25-30 mpg is the same as getting 100-120 mpg. Now we just need to be able to keep our jobs. :-)

Many of my neighbors will impoverish and bankrupt themselves in order to keep driving, because that's all they know. I expect to see lots of real estate signs popping up in my neighborhood during my usual walk to work. But who will buy?

I predict that in the near future we will see large lots across America full of worthless guzzling SUV's and pick-up trucks that no one wants or can afford to drive. Sort of like large graveyards.

Good work NevadaGhosts.

I'm glad I bought that scooter that gets 70 mpg. :-D

Now to just wait until it gets warm enough to use it... :(

...and to save up for a Honda Insight for the winter months.

Pick up a 1980's Honda Civic HF for $2,500 that gets almost the same mileage as the Honda Insight hybrid.

Wonder if those people driving SUV's and trucks know why I am laughing at them when they pull up next to me while I'm riding my 100 mpg Honda Metropolitan scooter. I even laugh at hybrids. Ahem. :P

heating oil at $2 per gallon
400 gallons/year = 800 dollars 500 gallons/year = 1000 dollars

heating oil at $3 per gallon
400 gallons/year = 1200 dollars 500 gallons/year = 1500 dollars

heating oil at $5 per gallon
400 gallons/year = 2000 dollars 500 gallons/year = 2500 dollars

heating oil at $7 per gallon
400 gallons/year = 2400 dollars 500 gallons/year = 3500 dollars

heating oil at $10 per gallon
400 gallons/year = 4000 dollars 500 gallons/year = 5000 dollars

GHP = $16,000 installation fee, minimal cost to operate.
16000 / 800 = 20 year payback
16000 / 1600 = 10 year payback
16000 / 3200 = 5 year payback
16000 / 5000 = 3.2 year payback

My dad made a similar statement a few months ago, saying they'd be "glorified yard ornaments." :-D

Thanks for doing those calculations - my car is a Toyota Corolla, and though we don't drive as many miles as you calculated, it does give me good ammo to use when I'm convincing my husband that he needs to spend money more wisely :). He's aware of Peak Oil, and though I think he does most of the preps we do to humor me, he knows in the long run it'll be worth it, whether the reason we're preparing is Peak Oil or not.

My heating will be included in my rent, which might be interesting long term. But after my current school + work and my move, I expect my milage to go down to a several miles a day, since I will be within a couple miles of work, shopping, and Church. My big commute will be weekly to see my father in his nursing home (whose distance will unfortunately increase. But it will not be long before he does not recognize me, and these visits will likely drop off).

And then I slide past you and flip my rear derailleur into a lower gear, spit, chuckle at your funny looking scooter and zoom off on the only vehicle on the road consuming no fossil fuels.

Resulting caloric deficit? Drink two beers!

1. USA is larger than any european country. Distances are longer.
2. American vechiles use a lot more gas than european, smaller cars.

That makes it harder to get used to.

But you are. It takes fossil fuels to grow the food you eat to power your bicycle.

A hybrid is still worthwhile. If a hybrid is getting 50 mpg and you have a carpool of 4 organized, that is essentially 200 mpg compared to current practices of 1 person per car at 20 mpg.

I plan on getting an electric scooter when they become available. All we need is a decent one that can get 50 miles per charge.

Never once have I seen a hybrid car with more than 2 people in it. But it's usually just one- the driver. And those Prius hybrid drivers always look like nerdy environmentalists.

$100 oil price is coming soon

Postby NevadaGhosts » Tue 15 Mar 2005, 19:32:53

Oil could gush to $100:$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '&')quot; It [$100 oil] is totally realistic within a year or two," said Stephen Leeb, who tracks oil for his own investment firm.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'S')o, how realistic is more acceleration of oil prices?
"I don't think $100 is even a big deal," Leeb said. His long-term projection? Try $250 a barrel in six to nine years.
