What do you drive?

Unread postby MidwesternMom » Tue 29 Jul 2008, 16:55:47

For those that own automobiles, what type? We currently have a mid 90's maxima that is paid for and an 06 honda crv that is more than halfway paid off. Is it wise to keep the honda which gets about 22-25 mpg once it is paid for? I know this is not the best gas mileage, but i cannot convince my husband to go to just having one vehicle eventhough I stay at home with our son most of the time, and his job is in the same town we live in. Right now the carpayment is about 1/4 of our debt not including the mortgage. In a little over two years it will be paid off, and i am reluctant to get another payment soon afterwards for some hybrid or solar car etc.

I have a $1,200 scooter. It gets ALL the girls.

If there's one thing high school girls love, it's fuel efficiency and environmentally friendly transportation.

I'm part a dangerous scooter gang and we took down a rival gang of 14 year old girls the other night, I got 6 stitches in my elbow but they suffered much worse...they'll never leave their territory again...as in...I hit some gravel and fell and cut up my arm pretty bad...haha....

I love my scooter, 5$ to fill it up and it lasts me anywhere between a week to two weeks :D

Besides the stable of bicycles that represent my main mode of transportation, I have a 98 beetle that I fill up every 2 months or so.

A VW Polo 1.4 TDI. 3-cyl turbo diesel engine. Rough at start, smooth like a kitten as you reach 40 mph. Does somewhere close to 50 mpg (a bit under 5l/100km). Haven't driven it in 2 weeks, it's the railway for me. :)

We had a 2001 VW Golf tdi and a 2004 Beetle tdi. The last fill-up with the Golf calculated out at 52.9 mpg. The Beetle averages around 46 mpg. Both have recently been sold since we are moving overseas in less than three weeks.

Estimates on tdi engine life range from 300k to 500k miles. YMMV.

A 2006 Honda CR-V, gets 22-25 mpg. But I rarely drive it without it being full of kids or full of stuff I'm hauling (generally groceries, but I've hauled bricks, lumber, etc, for my preps). And the 4wd comes in handy during the winter, when it's often icy.

Yamaha Zuma 49cc scooter. It gets around 100 mpg. I'm thinking about selling my car, a Toyota Matrix which gets 26-32 mpg, since I live in a warm climate and the scooter works just fine. And DUDE, that is the most ferocious mullet I've seen in a while!

What are YOU doing going after high school girls, isn't that illegal and just plain WRONG for old men like you? ;)

In 5 years I have put 250,000 miles on our VW TDI Golf.

50 mpg

Up until about 20.00 per gallon it makes financial sense to do the job and drive the miles that I do... i am making plans to make "other arrangements" prior to then however.

Primarily I drive my 1987 Toyota 4wd truck, which gets 20-25 mpg depending upon circumstance. Also have a 1967 Toyota Stout flatbed, which is for sale, btw, best offer. Then there's my 1989 Cannondale mountain bike and 1985 Tomaso road bike, which is being refurbished with touring tires for treks into town (14 miles). What complicates things is that the first 2 miles out of the homestead are un-graveled, un-maintained dirt/mud/powder dust depending on time of year...
