I've been to a Starbuck's once and I'll never be back.

Damned if I'm going to learn a new language just to enjoy a cup of coffee. And for $5???

Venti? Well, since we're on the subject...

It's Italian for '20', as in 20 oz.

Over here in the UK if you ask someone if they fancy a drink it used to mean going for a "pint" of beer. Now all you hear is the Hoorays and F---wits saying "no it's OK. Shall we go for a coffee instead". And the first thing that comes out of their stupid mouths after reeling off nonsensical Italian..."Oh make it a Venti"
i.e A FOOKIN PINT

My son works at Starbuck's, for about ten years now. I always got my drinks (venti chai) for free, even from the other employees. I haven't gotten a free chai in about three months now, not even from my son. He said the word came down from 'on high'. They are hurting.

On the news last night they reported 2 more big businesses here in Boise as being in trouble. 2 restaurants, Andrae's and Table Rock Pizza.

Andrae's is closing for good.
Table rock is filing for bankruptcy.

500 EMPLOYEES IDLED Furniture firm stops work at Norwalk plant
Tuesday, July 22, 2008
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'N')ORWALK, Ohio - Norwalk Furniture Corp., the city's largest manufacturer and its second-biggest employer, suspended operations at its local facility yesterday, idling more than 500 workers.

In a weekend statement, the privately held company blamed the suspension of operations at its plant in Norwalk and another in Cookeville, Tenn., on a slowing economy and changes in the furniture industry. Norwalk Furniture's sales dropped $8 million from 2006 to 2007.

I was walking out of my building today and had to detour around some building maintenence. Brought me in front of the local drug store (Gold Cross Drugs, for those in Eugene/Springfield, OR). It was barren. I didn't even know they were going out of business. This business was a staple in downtown for generations. My wife couldn't believe it when I told her.

Individual stores or chains closing down is something that happens even in the best of economic times. I think whole shopping malls closing down to be a more significant indicator. Our closest mall (in Tennessee) has lost several stores and the remainder are so lacking in customers that the whole mall seems unviable. However, a larger mall 15 miles away still seems busy.

Rural Western Illinois. There were 2 big chain fast food places in the county seat until last month. Hardee's closed down in June - sure you can guess which one is left.

No calls for eight months...

I was speaking with a friend from highschool the other day. He and three more of my friends bought some land and put in a subdivision with 52 lots a couple of years ago. My friend was the one who took the calls to sell the lots.

He told me he got 3 good calls per week when they first opened the subdivision and he sold the first ~24 lots fairly quickly, then the calls dried up like falling off of a cliff. He said he hasn't had a call for a lot in eight months now. He told me they are still a little underwater but that being able to sell the 24 lots really helped out a lot. The funny thing is that if they had opened it 6 months earlier they would have been able to sell all or almost all of the lots and would have made great money. :(
