Link I'll warn you - this is a rant. I'm sure this has been posted and referenced other places - it's almost a month old, but seriously. Is this for real?
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')his month, just 9% say Congress is doing a good or excellent job. Most voters (52%) say Congress is doing a poor job, which ties the record high in that dubious category.

The congress of the United States has a nine percent approval rating. NINE percent. How badly do you have to fuck up that even your own party doesn't want you?
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he percentage of Democrats who give Congress positive ratings fell from 17% last month to 13% this month. The number of Democrats who give Congress a poor rating remained unchanged. Among Republicans, 8% give Congress good or excellent ratings, up just a point from last month. Sixty-five percent (65%) of GOP voters say Congress is doing a poor job, down a single point from last month.

Not to slam republicans (the vast majority on here are intelligent people and I respect you and your views), but despite being unable to articulate the English language, started a war by lying to the American public and trampling the Constitution and Bill of Rights, he's still got a 28% following.
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'J')ust 12% of voters think Congress has passed any legislation to improve life in this country over the past six months. That number has ranged from 11% to 13% throughout 2008. The majority of voters (62%) say Congress has not passed any legislation to improve life in America.

So really - what are they doing up there on capitol hill anyway, with their fat salaries, lobbyists and free-ride-for-life pensions?
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'V')oters hold little positive sentiment about the future. Just 41% find it at least somewhat likely that Congress will address important problems facing our nation in the near future, while 55% find this unlikely.

Hmm... Important issues like what - I don't know, healthcare reform, EDUCATION, inflation, foreign policy... possibly demanding accountability. An economy based on something besides flipping burgers and outsourcing jobs would be a start. Election reform. Ha. Fraud + plausible deniability = Job Security on Capitol hill. Oh yeah, what was that again... ENERGY?

Fail.
No wait.

Looks like America's on the right track today folks. Not only can the pilot not fly, but the whole crew is in first class getting hammered on the high life. So what exactly ARE they doing while we're out here busting our asses trying to make a way for ourselves in these perilous times?
$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A') separate Rasmussen survey found that half of all voters believe America’s best days are in the past. ... Most voters (72%) think most members of Congress are more interested in furthering their own political careers. Just 14% believe members are genuinely interested in helping people.

I think I saw this in a PBS nature special one time.

Normally, when you don't do your job, you get fired right? For instance, if I was a cashier and I accidentally lost the till, maybe if I was lucky the FIRST TIME, it would come out of my check. The second time, I'm pretty sure I'd be talking to the cops. How about that $13 Billion in baled cash that got "lost" in Iraq? "It happens?" Excuse me? "It happens?!" You 'lose' $13 Billion dollars, and "It happens." Uh huh. Step into my office please. I think it's high time for an "employee review" here, since these people obviously don't understand WTF it is they are supposed to be doing between gym dates, golf outings and spa treatments.

Only a handfull even ATTEND all the votes. Hats off to them - at LEAST they show up for work. But what do we get for showing up to work every day? Pink slips. Sorry, your job's been moved to India, or Mexico. Have a great day...btw, want a new credit card to pay that mortgage with?

What was that quote again - "No taxation without representation?" Yeah well, epic fail. See above. I can't think of anything they've done to represent ME, the little guy. The guy that's working in a "service" job and trying to pay for school, put gas in my car, and save up a couple bucks so in case I break my arm I don't go bankrupt and fall through the cracks and end up working at a fast food joint and living pay check to pay check the rest of my life.

I got a check for $300 bucks a couple months ago to "stimulate" the economy. $300 bucks. It was my money to begin with, and they're going to "give" it to me so I can spend it and prop up the profits of some big monopolies? Yeah right. Am I supposed to say "thank you?"

Let's see - the US is $9.5 trillion and some change in debt. Spread out over every man, woman, 1 day old child, and EVEN resident aliens, that's $31,000 a piece? And it grows at about 1.74 Billion per day. So every month go ahead and write a check to the US Treasury for $174, because one way or another, they're going to take it out of you. And now they're considering giving the Fed a blank check to "bail out" mortgage lenders. I work hard for my money. We all do - and for what? So they can tax half of it, and inflate the other half into worthlessness? Because that's what's going to happen - they add $5 Trillion in "new money" and every dollar you have stashed away in your bank, IRA, 401k - whatever, is going to instantly lose 1/3 of it's value.

Have you been frugal enough to stash away $100,000 for retirement?
"No no no, don't cash that out, you'll get taxed 40% on that! That would be a bad buisness move!"
"Here Ben, have my $30,000."
"Thanks good citizen, let me give this to my buddy here, oh and thanks for the title to your property too! You're too generous! Tell you what, since you've been so cooperative, we'll let your bank account keep saying $100,000, we'll just reduce your buying power and you'll feel better about it. Oh but btw, if you take that out, we're still taxing you for 40% of what's left."

Fuck. You. Representatives? Public servants? No, let's call this what it is. This is fucked up. They are liars and they are theives. It's time we had people representing us that come from where we come from. People that have lived what we live. People who have struggled in their lives, and understand what it means to want. That feel what we feel. That see what we see.

Americans have been pacified by a dream that "it will get better." That "things will change next term." I have seen through this, and I take this deception very personally. They have stolen from me. From my family. From my friends. From your children. They have sucked the life out of a once proud nation. They have desecrated and disgraced those who devoted and gave their lives to The United States of America.

This is a sham. Our international reputation is destroyed. Our leaders are a joke to the rest of the world. "Seat of Democracy?" We've become a rogue nation. The only UN country to ever block election inspectors. The only G8 country to ever block an investigation by the IMF. I've heard people tell me "well if you don't like it, leave. Go somewhere else if you think it's so bad." No. This is mine. This is my country. This is your country. This is ours.

I was born here, and it is my right to select my government. It is my right not to be a slave to the ruling elite. It is my responsibility to stand up for everyone around me for the same.
That is what being an American used to mean, and I will be damned if it won't again.

There must be a line in the sand. This far, but no further. They have muddied it, obscured it, complicated it and tried to destroy it, but the framework to remove these parasites exists in the law. We can undo this, but we must take action. If we continue to stand idly by, the United States of America is going to end a ravaged husk of a failed nation, fiscally and democratically bankrupt.

It is not enough to say "Nothing can be done," or "I can't make a difference." It is not enough to say "I would, but they would stop me." We already know the outcome if we do nothing. There is no doubt in our minds. We've seen it. They aren't going to change. It will be the same lies, the same deceptions, the same theft, destruction and treason. Nothing will change unless we change it. We must try.

I propose a recall vote on this congress. They have failed their charge and their oath. Every state's laws are different. Some do not allow a recall. But most do. Those that do not represent a small minority, and are only a pen stroke away from enacting similar laws if their people support it.

Democracy must not fail here. Not in the United States. In other countries when leaders repeatedly rape, and fail to represent their people, there are riots, unrest, and armed revolution. That must not happen here. It was our Declaration of Independance and our Constitution that gave the rest of the world hope that a civilized people could rule themselves and not slip into the darkness of facism, dictatorship, or civil war. It is our duty to show the world that democracy can work. The United States of America was once a shining beacon of freedom in the world. We are tarnished, beaten and infested with vermin, but the world will still follow us.
Let us not lead them into darkness.

National polls on "congress" don't tell you much. Everybody thinks the "other" district's congressman or other state's senators are whacked. I'd love to see Harry Reid out of there, the moron - but my senators (one dem and one repub) I'd vote for again. My rep (a democrat) is a bit cantankerous but he usually doesn't say too many idiotic things like Pelosi.

My Congressman, Bill Delahunt, needs to be booted out of office. There is absolutely no chance of that happening but he still needs to go.

The guy has voted against every single tax cut every proposed by anyone including votes against eliminating the marriage penalty.

He gets a rating of "F" by the NRA.

He supports a completely open border with Mexico.

He voted to criminalize OPEC () and while he says he supports alternative energy...he strongly opposes the Cape Wind Project.

Apparently he thinks that other people should just give us clean energy instead of producing it for ourselves.

His only saving grace is that he gets a high rating from NORML. 8)

Overall he gets a D+ in my book.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'h')e's still got a 28% following.

Nixon, previously the most corrupt president in american history, still was in the 20's the week he was forced from office.
Just goes to show that there is a certain fraction of the people that will cling to a politician, or a stated political philosophy, no matter how damn bad it is.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('jbrovont', 'S')o really - what are they doing up there on capitol hill anyway, with their fat salaries, lobbyists and free-ride-for-life pensions?
Doing what the people who paid to enable them to get there ask them to do. Isn't that how it works? The best democracy money can buy?

At least thats how non-Americans view it. Seems like a reasonable system, the only problem being that most Americans have this illusion that its something to do with the 'will of the people'. Well of course it isnt. Its mainly about the will of the military industrial complex- perpetual war for perpetual profit - and Wall Sreet, private profit scammed from the productive economy and publicly funded bailout when things go wrong. No point in whingeing about it- if you're unhappy about something form a PAC, gather together as many like minded individuals as possible and buy your way in to the system.

[quote="dinopello"]National polls on "congress" don't tell you much. Everybody thinks the "other" district's congressman or other state's senators are whacked. You've it exactly right , this is why vote the buggers out never happens. "Congress stinks, but our guy is pretty good" why do people feel that, because bring back the local pork, with the approval of the rest of congress who get the favor returned. All for the sake of the real motivation of congress, to get reelected. To hell with what is good for the country. Real statesman have little chance of getting elected, if they don't toe the party line and appease the far right or far left of their respective parties they have little chance of getting through the primaries. Ross Perot and Ron Paul had no chance because they told the hard truth about a lot of things. The reality of solving many of the problems in the US will require sacrifice by the citizens. Less government spending and give aways or more taxes. Just like children don't want to hear no more candy and you have to clean your room. Iwish I had a solution to fix this. It is easy to point out the problems, finding solution is a bit tougher.

Of the 91% who do not approve of Congress:
45% believe that the Democrats in Congress are to blame for all the problems we face
45% believe the Republicans in Congress are to blame for all the problems we face
1% think the two-party system is to blame for all the problems we face
The 9% who think Congress is doing a great job are likely suffering from diminished cognitive ability or were under the influence of illicit substances at the time of the poll.

Glenn Beck has a interesting suggestion-pitch forks and torches to get our elected official's attention. Apparently he is receiving quite a collection of pitch forks from his viewers.

It's amazing to me that a Republican president and a Democrat controlled Congress can both be wildly unpopular at the same time and yet nobody wants to throw the bums out on their ear and find a better way to govern ourselves.

Aside from the obvious "members of Congress SUCK - but my guy is a-OK!" wisdom, I have my own theory..

Republicans and right-leaners see a Democratically-controlled Congress. They're not about to give Congress any amount of approval, as that would be tantamount to party treason. So they will always tell pollsters that they aren't satisfied.

Meanwhile, Democrats and left-leaners see their party finally controlling Congress (for the first time in how long?), and yet their party's officeholders have been totally spineless in challenging Bush's policies, ending the war, etc. So they're not satisfied either.

So 9% doesn't surprise me one bit.

Don’t rail against my boy Tricky Dick Nixon. He kept me from dying in Vietnam and he got us to talking to the Chinese. His crime, obstruction of justice is no greater than your boy Bill’s perjury.

What you guys have to understand is that congress is no smarter than your average school board. It is made up of people with outsized egos who for the most part have not had a real day job in years.

Those that listen, depend on the wunderkind that makes up their staffs to tell them what to think and how to vote. Ever see them up close. They are all managed by some Michael Fox character who is continually trying to get the best camera angle for them.

The rest will in time succumb to hubris and be caught in bed with a live page or a dead girlfriend. Most if watched closely will be found stuffing cash into the freezer.

A very large part of the problem has been our own willingness to allow business as usual in Washington. Most of us looked on the shenanigans of the capital gang with mild amusement. Unless our personal ox was being gored we did not care about the little billion dollar dirty deals. The money was rolling in. Gas was cheap. The beer was cold and the neighbors were friendly.

These people are driven by self interest. They are survivors. They will vote the public interest when it supports their personal interest. We need to convince them that their survival depends on our survival.

As for the war, recognize it for what it was. Most accept the idea that the attacks came from Afghanistan. The conventional wisdom is that nobody has ever won a war in Afghanistan. Ask the British and ask the Russians. We needed a war we could win in the conventional sense. We needed to make a point. We needed to let every little despot with religious zeal know it was not going to work out well for him if he attacked the United States. Sadam drew the short straw. Some of you might remember that Libya gave up its bomb making plans shortly after the invasion of Iraq.

The larger reason is that we wanted a base of operations in the Middle East so that we were better positioned to play the end game as the last drop of oil is sucked out of that desert sand. We are there and we don’t have to depend on the Saudis or the Jews to be there. We will be there even after Obama gets elected. Remember that we are still in Germany and that was sixty years ago.

Now that big oil sees that its wells are running dry, we just may have a chance to develop alternative energy and do something about global warming. Then again, if we all went to bicycles tomorrow, the Indians and Chinese are not going to park their SUV’s. They worked too hard to get them.

Here's a list of senators that voted not to give the Federal Reserve the right to print the value of the USD out of existence:

Cornyn, Bunning, DeMint, Kyle, Corker, Thun, Grassley, Hatch, Hutchinson

Fourteen (14) aparently didn't even bother to show up and vote.

They get paid $169,300 a year, full benefits, get a cost of living adjustment, and get full retirement to do 3 things: read, write and show up for work.

How many different ways can I say this? Do your farking job!

Nice rant(s).

Recall vote? Takes too long with too much effort for too short of an effect. I guess it could be a start. Good signal to the rest of the world. It seems to me there's too many places where the people are great but their governments suck, including us now.

After thinking about this for some time, the only practical solution I can come up with is to repeatedly vote out incumbents, for several "generations" of Congress, and change some laws that force the dismantling and rebuilding of corruption-prone relationships between Congress, foreign governments, and corporations (lobbyists) on a regular basis. Seems to me this approach by the people may take a long time (20-40 years), but it would have lasting effects.

I am reminded of the old story of two patriots one a young man the other an old man. Both were Minute Men during the Revolution. Upon hearing the tumult of battle, the young man said let us run and get into the fight. The old man said let us walk to the fight. With any luck the fight will be over by the time we get there and we still will have done our duty.

There is something to be said for experience. What I don’t want is that experience to turn into a career. It takes a while to learn the ropes. It takes a longer while to learn to use those ropes efficiently. It takes even longer to learn to use them for your own self interest. Reasonable term limits would help thwart the last stage without depriving us of knowledgeable leadership. Make the term limits too short and you will end any hope of stability.

The beauty of our system is that it is conducive to change. There are millions of good hearted knowledgeable people in this country. Being a congressman should be a service not a career.

I can't agree with you more here Cloud9. It does turn into a career instead of a service doesn't it? It seems like people who want the job are exactly the people who shouldn't have it, and the people who would never want it are exactly the people who would probably do the best job for us.

Maybe public "service" should be more like jurry duty - a service you might end up being expected to do, but not something you can sign up to do.
