$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('eastbay', 'I') just NOW noticed the skinny streams of fluid have reached my feet and are now dripping on the floor. Is this a sign of possible infection or normal?

Probably not a big deal. Abrasions tend to weep a lot of serum. If it's coming out of a deeper hole near the knee joint itself, then that could be joint fluid which would be a bad thing. Injuries that penetrate into the joint generally require washing the joint out in the operating room to prevent the joint from becoming infected.

Signs of wound infection are redness, warmth, pain, swelling, and loss function. You're going to have some of all that from the original injury but it should get progressively better. If it starts getting worse, that'd be the time to worry. Puss (white, grey, or green goopy drainage) can be a sign of infection. You'll get some white stuff coagulated on the wound as it heals, but if you're getting a lot of that kind of drainage on the bandage that could be worrisome. Also systemic symptoms - feeling ill, temp over 100.4, or chills would be worrisome.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('eastbay', '
')I see you're in northern California. You must be on vacation. Nice.

Why do you presume I'm on vacation, because of of the dry lake? No, I was riding from home. Northern California has a varied geography, for sure...

Yeah, it was the dry lake. I kinda figured you were in the southern part. Almost impossible to crash on a dry lake.

SPG,

Thanks for the information. As I sit here reading po.com at 7am, a tiny yellow streamlet is creeping down from the skin wound across my calf and drying as it heads to my feet. No unusual warmth. No body temp. All appears on proper track.

But day two and it still stings, which is to be expected. If the hospital was one rather than 25 miles away, I may have dropped in right away too. It's that deep.

As more and more take to bicycles this sort of injury will become more commonplace. Home remedies, such as AC's kind suggestion, will be the primary path to healing.

Yeah clear, tan, or pink drainage is just serum, and you're going to get some of that. Basically things should get steadily better. If they start getting worse...more redness, more pain, etc, that's the point to get worried.

Best wishes, EB, you'll be fine I bet.

When I was a kid, I crashed in fresh gravel. They had to pick it out of my knees. I almost passed out, I still have the scars. I'm a klutz. That's why I want a trike. :)

Thanks MG

I had a nurse inspect it about an hour ago. She suggested keeping it dry and uncovered for the next few days and remain seated or lying with the leg elevated with no walking or exposure to needless contamination, as in no more gardening like I did yesterday. She was unhappy with how moist the bandage was. My fault.

The issue is the swelling in my calf. She said if it increases or if redness appears around the perimeter of the wound go to emergency. She basically said what SPG said about fluids which are prominent and the proper color, light yellow, and watching for redness/ swelling. Oh, and to clean it now and then. YIKES!

This crash has been a nice distraction from the the 'other' topic we recently had. :)
