Glad you're ok eastbay. I've fucked myself up pretty bad in bike accidents (some perminant damage) but it could have been a whole lot worse. Play it safe!

Eastbay, just make sure you've cleaned out the area with the roadrash really well, to prevent infection.

Glad you're okay!

Well, I didn't exactly scrub it because I would have passed out if I had, but I poured lots of water over it once immediately after the crash and again 10 minutes later when I got home. And again after I changed the bandages before bed.

I'll clean it again in a few minutes. It's 'leaking' quite a bit, and the bandages I used last night are thoroughly pink, which is normal, I hope. It's quite deep.

Just trying to do my part to control overshoot... heh.

Eastbay, this link talks about treating road rash. Note that it advises against scrubbing hard, and against hydrogen peroxide. It says sodium chloride solution is better.

Thanks. I used a dry patch and neosporin cream immediately afterward and another last night. It's way too early to determine if it's working. I always liked the 'let it air out' technique, and my elbow's are uncovered and untreated because they're fairly minor road rash, but the knee is a bit deep so maybe I should keep it moist, as suggested in your link.

A late morning shower today will ruin last nights covering, so I'll remove the bandage, shower, and repeat last nights dry patch and neosporin cream and hope for the best.

I want to get back riding so bad... :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('eastbay', '
')Upon closer inspection... what a knucklehead, I should have glanced twice not once. I had a 80cc Super Glide and later an 88cc (upped to 95) Road King. Never had a shovel, but I should know better.

No problem. I'm going to be picky again.
It should be ci (cubic inches) not cc (cubic centimetres)
Just ignore me, bwahahaaa.

Road King's are nice rides for sure.
The 78 in my screen name is for my '78 Shovelhead chopper.
A real bitch to ride but great fun.

I put 25,000 miles on the '98 Dyna and 65,000 on the '01 Road King zig zagging through California rush hour traffic and never crashed or layed down either one. Not even one time. Well, I broke a mirror off some guys truck once, but that doesn't really count because he was too close to me... lol. Came fairly close a few dozen times, like most others, but had a very lucky time. Saw a few go down, however. Nothing serious. Charmed life, I suppose.

Nope. Just the bicycle and a small scooter, which is my small contribution to feeding Jevons Paradox. And saving our family lots of money. And part of my personal downscaling of cravings, which started about the time I joined this site just under four years ago. :)

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('smallpoxgirl', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('eastbay', 'T')aking the bandage off was not fun. There is no shortage of sting in those bandages.

If you decide to bandage it again, get some telfa.

Get well soon!

Hey SPG, we're using telfa pads for such wounds around this (accident prone) household! I just checked. Thanks. :)

cbexr55, I made that "picky" post because eastbay mentioned the 80, 88 and 95 engines and being familiar with them I knew they were ci sizes.

eastbay, I don't feel guilty riding my bikes. At least I know I'm getting around 45-50 mpg and that is far better than most vehicles on the road. I've got saddle bags too so they are handy for picking up items, if they are not too large. Still though, admittedly I ride mostly for pleasure not utility.

No problem! I'm no saint, that's for sure burning more than my share of jet fuel! But that's coming to a close for me too.

The cc was an idiotic typo on my part. I DO know better. :)

Ha, I knew you did.
I'm burning jet fuel too, as a passenger but that is part of my job working internationally, not much I can do about that.
I'm helping increase supply though. I'm in the oil exploration business, have been for 30 yrs. and it doesn't look like I'll be looking for another line of work for awhile.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('eastbay', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Homesteader', 'T')hat is good but not as good as Arron's story! If we had a "watering hole" thread I'd buy you an ale or some strange drink like a Hubbert's Meseto.

Man, NOTHING can top Aaron's story! Nothing. That one was a SPINE TINGLER! Mine's just an everyday crash story. Drag to be off the bike for awhile... off my feet too, it seems.

Lol, great thread.

Road rash is not fun.

Here's my latest experience with flesh-tearing asphalt. And yes, my bike escaped unscathed. Alas...not me.
Worst was the hole in my palm. A lot mor painful than it looks.

But skin heals...rims don't.

Whoooo! Curbs are the bane of a cycler's existence.

Looks like my knee except mines leaking clearish fluid in tint streams. How long ago was this? I took no pictures.

I just NOW noticed the skinny streams of fluid have reached my feet and are now dripping on the floor. Is this a sign of possible infection or normal?

Lol...about 2 weeks ago. Knee still has scabs. I just had lots o' blood. No strange fluids. I still can't believe my rims are still straight.

Haha...I took the photos for posterity's sake, and to show me mum.

Yeah...curbs. Haha. I wasn't paying attention either, and next thing I know, I am heading palms down to the asphalt at 30 km/h.

Hand is still screwy, I think I damaged the underside of my knuckle.

Could be joint fluid.
Might have ripped a whole in the meniscus of the knee?
Ask Smallpox girl.

If it's clear, probably not infected. If it looks yellow, or really yucky, and smells...infected.

As I understand it, Usnea tincture is good for fending off infection -- put some on the wounds topically, and take it internally too for extra infection fighting strength...

You can also use olive leaf tincture -- the herbalist I work for often describes alternating between the two, especially early after a potential infection risk... You want to be sure the skin doesn't heal over on the outside while there is still any infection underneath!

And there's no harm from the herbs in the case that you don't have any infection, plus, herbs are way cheaper than big pharma's pills!

You can probably get these herbs locally, but if not, here is the place I work for -- you can order online...

http://www.eaglepeakherbals.com/

They're totally hip to the coming crash, very cool place to work!

Sorry for the sales pitch, I won't make a habit of it. But learning about herbal medicine seems totally on-topic for preparing for post-peak life...
