Take it as a exercise in prediction or creative writing or both (you can even have three versions - cornicopian, doomer & middle of the road).

If you expect to be living more seasonally at that time feel free to include a different report for each season (or maybe just two).

Anyway, enjoy & thanks for playing! :)

I think there is a fairly good chance I might be dead by 2013.

Why do you think so? And you didn't tell me about your afterworldly activities!

Geez, no one's playing?

I have some scenarios in my head but it's hard to get a real picture of what I will be doing in 5-years time. I know some of you have much more clear goals within that timeframe than I do so I thought I'd ask.

Why do you think so?

Novus is 107 years old and has just received a very reasonable quote for life assurance.

Would write more but just woke up in the here and now and am still sweeping cobwebs out of the old puzzler... :-D

I'll be happily going around in my new job as chief logistics in a medium sized company, after which I go home on my bicycle to eat a nice vegetarian meal made by loving girlfriend who I plan to marry later that year, after which we plan our railroad/cycling holiday to Spain after which I show her this very post on this very forum which in turn makes her faint after saying "but that's just impossible!"

My plan has always been to go do some peacekeeping someday so i could be doing that. Atleast the army wont run out of work. Im guessing i'll be preserving peace somewhere near oil wells though. :P

If things get too bad in Finland for that then i dont have a clue.

I think oil prices will remain relatively high and therefore demand for young experienced petroleum landmen in California will continue to climb. The first leg of my current company's pension will be vested in 2011 and then I will begin to search for a job elswhere in California to get out of Los Angeles.

There are 3 main areas of job opportunties for myself in California that I would consider: Central Coast, Kern County, & Sacramento Valley.

This year I have turned down 2 job offers because it is not the right timing. I have commitments outside of work that are more important right now and I am not fully vested in the pension.

When we move we will take the proceeds out of our current house and be able to buy a little bit of land since those areas are much cheaper than where I live now. I actually am very excited because I grew up with a large veg garden my parents had but living in Los Angeles we don't have the space to have a large garden because our patio takes up most of the yard. I haven't destroyed it because it adds great value to the house for when we sell it. So I look forward to gardening with space.

I don't plan on being self-sustaining just buying less groceries. I don't think peak oil will be a destroying factor until long after that. So I plan on the economy being similiar as today's economy except without the credit crisis, housing collapse, etc... I anticipate the stock markets rising, the dollar rising, and people start adjusting to the idea of long term high oil prices.

And I anticipate offshore drilling in California by then and a whole new mini oil boom in California bringing in new oil money therefore new job opportunities.

In 2013 I'll be commanding the placement of the trebuchets around the perimeter of the defunct airport mesa, for hurling caltrops in front of the charging Navajo cavalry.

I'll probably be embittered and sullen about having to keep working, rather than being retired, because our portfolio will be in such horrendous shape due to the ongoing economic collapse.

I'm assuming, of course, that there will still be some sort of gainful employment available for me. That may be wishful thinking, obviously. I may be embittered, sullen, unemployed, and broke.

But at least you won't be bored, Zard, or bereft of anything to do. Foraging for food will keep you too occupied to dwell on how sullen & embittered you feel.

Here's what I envision:

I'll spend most of my day on the farm. Running through my daily seasonal specific tasks (planting, harvesting, cultivating, tending to animals, fixing, delegatin, putting up etc) that will allow me and mine to have long term sustainability. I'll be chasing after the hired man to get him to finish up his list too.

I will be teaching skills (practical and theoretical) my kids and probably a few local orphans.

I'll be enjoying homemade whiskey and beer and listening to friends and family tell stories about the oild days and playing music together.

I'll be having an afternoon nap. I'll be checkin in on the old folks. I'll be planning a trip to the nearby town of 2000 before it snows.

I'd be keepin one ear "to the ground" monitoring the short wave and listening for my remote sensing alarms...

I will be working in my aquaculture/agriculture garden, trying to decide if there is enough crap in the bottom of the fish tank to release to the garden on the hillside below. Then I will decide the hell with it and go sample some of the homebrew that should be ready by now. After that I will probably take a nap.

I like all the napping people mention.

I'll be napping. In fact, I think I'll start now. :)

Napping is a wise strategy. The more you sleep, the less calories you will need!

in 2013, 5 years from now, IMHO the effects of the depression that is starting now, will be receding. During that period problably there would be some (big) resource wars.
If i make it to 2013 I´ll be probably chasing rats with a pointed stick to eat, and maybe relishing on the though that the government promised to distribute some food to the unemployed.
After that there are still in the queue the effects of overpopulation, escarcity of resources and climate change.

.
I’m living in a culvert which is dry most of the time, thankfully.
I dragged some dead branches to hide the entrance so hopefully it will last longer than my last home.
Nearby is a stream, so I’m living on watercress, raw crawfish, and the camel crickets I find here in the culvert.
Someone stole my garden cart, but yesterday I found an old baby stroller for triplets.
Today I will bring it around the back of the old dump to look for intact plastic bottles for water. It's safer to avoid the roads which are patrolled by an infamous warlord they call "Jack".
.
I have an old lighter that still works, but I’m afraid to make a fire.
I still have my sketchbook and one small pencil, so most days I stay in the culvert and draw and journal my life and memories. The fewer calories I burn, the better.
How I lost my friends i still don’t understand - they left to go foraging and never returned, but I will wait here as long as I can in case they make it back.
I’m thinner than ever, and totally amazed at the turns my life has taken. The irony of it all is that I thought I was doing everything right-
organic farming, remote homestead, food stored.
Little did I know.
