Alias TV Show Mentioning Peak Oil (Transcript)

Unread postby Lora » Sun 13 Mar 2005, 01:27:34

Early in the show in Paris, Sydney spray-paints an SUV with the slogan "OIL IS..." in order to get arrested on purpose. They never show the rest of the slogan. Later in the episode, at a small dinner party, the following conversation takes place...

Eric: She was crazy in Paris. I'm not kidding. I'm thinking about making my next car a hybrid.

Sydney: You should, I have one.

Jack: Well, considering the rapidly growing demand for fuel in nations such as China and India, not to mention the world's oil production is expected to peak within the next 5 years and then sharply (with emphasis) plummet, I think it's pretty clear we're looking at an exponential rise in global conflict as well as an energy crisis of unfathomable proportions. So yes, I'd say a hybrid is an excellent idea.

Eric: That's what I thought.

Current events? I didn't think a fictional TV show episode was a "current event", but who knows.

it shows some people are willing to talk about, even though it's in a fictional world.

Well, it WAS a current episode!

Badly written, though. That guy who plays Jack (Sydney's dad, I think?) must be one good actor to actually SAY those words the way they were written! They look like they were directly lifted from a PO technical report, which ain't exactly normal human speech!

Thanks for putting the scene in, though, Mr. A! If you ever try writing one for a LOST episode, though, please tell your writers to have the characters talk like human beings, OK? OK! :)

Jack, Sydney's father on the show, does talk in dry technical and unemotional terms almost all the time. It really wasn't out of character for him to say something like that.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'G')ee, and look what I've been missing by not having a tv.

Still, most people are glued to their easy chairs, staring at the tube. They've GOT to hear about PO somewhere, and TV's the most likely spot. So it's good that it's getting mentioned.

Now, if they'd go on to mention that as nice as having a hybrid is, that's still not gonna stop oil depletion....

So were they presenting the idea seriously, or was it more like "look what this idiot believes"?
