$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', 'M')aybe I am a little more concerned than you?

Yes, it's all going to shit. I am concerned about that, as well as depressed, in fact. But what is the point of dwelling on it? Dwelling never solved anything.

I don't really think at this point that any intelligent person should need any more evidence of PO and it's ramifications. People who refuse to believe the obvious really aren't the intelligent.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Heineken', 'D')on't you mean "untenable," Rogo? Or "not tenable"?

Every once in a while I've had that feeling of universal love---usually when I've been taking a narcotic painkiller. It is a glorious feeling. But it never lasts, because there is so much conflicting evidence, namely, evidence that most people are selfish and dangerous jerks.

Yes, I meant untenable.

Even if everything collapses we were all beautiful at least once.

Yeah, the painkiller wears off and there you are again, deep in the ant heap. But you had that moment in the surreal sun.

A person's life might be likened to a flash of light in an eternal black void. I often think of mine that way, and of other animal lives, even those of the smallest most inconsequential insects. I hate to kill anything---to bring the forever darkness prematurely to those other eyes.

That flash of light, when it is actualized and manifest, is hopefully understood and fully used (I've had two of those tohen experiences). I too do not enjoy killing sentient beings, but I know it's necessary for my survival.

You never read about the lives of Einstien then? or Plato? or even Paul MacCready, Stanley Mason, James Maxwell or Cyrun McCormick? For shame dwelling on these towers of intellect makes you see just what dwelling and imagination can really do.

A universal love doesn't have to go both ways. In fact, it just doesn't. It's possible to love everyone, honestly. And it's real. It is not, however complete since those that irradiate universal, unconditional, honest love aren't everyone. :)

Nano,

You seem to have contradicted yourself. You don't seem to be worried about PO because you have fully accepted the possibility and have positioned yourself to survive, if not benefit, from the coming crisis. So have I and perhaps to a greater degree then you as I work in the oil patch AND live in Texas. So I don't worry about PO from a personal perspective. Thus I see you as "ultimate hippie".

But I do worry about the futures of others not as fortunate as you and I. I do focus on the discussions regarding policies, etc that could lessen the blow of PO even though they might be slightly counterproductive to my own interests. But you're right about the upside benefits of economic collapse. There have been many essays written about the great wealth building aspects of past economic meltdowns. I don't recall the link but this one essay clearly documented how the Great Depression of the 30's increased the numbers of millionaires in the US many fold. Personally, I hope you hang around as your presence does make a useful counterpoint. Or, as we say in Texas: "the main reason I wear cowboy boots is because it feels so good when I take them off".

I do worry quite a lot about the fate of the untold hundreds of millions who never benefitted from capitalism, in fact who probably suffered by it. Who never contributed to global warming due to not consuming anything, yet who are getting that full in the face too, what with skyrocketing food prices.

The thought of the extreme, widespread suffering that has been, is, and will be, still baffles my comprehension, especially since realising the constraints on human development that are a direct result of peak oil.

If anything, peak oil destroyed a great illusion of mine, namely the conviction that - eventually - all of humanity would be lifted-up from extreme poverty, given enough time and effort. After understanding PO I saw that this conviction of mine was baseless and in fact probably no more than a defense mechanism to not feel greedy while enjoying extreme comfort and luxury compared to perhaps 99% of the world population. I mean: how can one enjoy frivolous luxury if one knows that such luxury is a gross misuse of scarce and valuable resources?

After realising PO and it's constraints on human development I couldn't enjoy anything anymore, except for reading and surfing the web, which I still regard as excuseable waste of resources.

Nowadays I am coming around and returning to my old ways, which involve somewhat more resource wastage than the low point of my PO journey a few years ago. Much of this renewed wastage has to do with social activities that are more or less a part of my work as an energy consultant.

You might be surprised to know that clients seem to be more confident of your qualities if you demonstrate that you enjoy luxury and frivolous consumption. I guess it has something to do with the idea that someone who enjoys luxury is willing to go the extra mile in order to be able to keep doing that, i.e. deliver a better product to the customer. Clients appear to be suspicious of people who are modest in their consumption, for those people might very well also be modest in putting effort into delivering a good product, I imagine.

Well nano, I now know you a little better and apologize for any offense you may have read in my words. And I very much understand about the "appearence" issue. I sell ideas for a living and the folks I often sell to don't have the technical background to understand the subject matter. Whick is why my partners usually make me sit in the back of the room and keep my mouth shut. I have a tendency to want to make them understand the technolgy so they can make an informed decision. And there I go...trying to sell the steak instead of the sizzle. Just a geogeek at heart when you come down to it
