AA considers adding anti-missile technologies to planes

Unread postby hope_full » Wed 16 Jul 2008, 19:36:50

There should be a category here for news items that are just scary as hell. This is the first one I'd put under that category.

Every now and then, I have to fly but reading this news article makes me think about driving across country instead and I don't even LIKE driving.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'A')merican Airlines Testing Anti-Missile Technology

BOSTON (WBZ) ― You can almost touch the planes as they roar over Point Shirley in Winthrop on their way to Logan Airport. The passengers were checked for explosives before they got on, however, a growing concern is what could happen away from the airport: Terrorist firing a shoulder launched-missile just outside the airport's property. The light weight weapons are becoming and more available on the black market, as many as 150,000 are believed to be in circulation and can easily bring down a plane.

But now American Airlines is flying with new defensive technology on some of its New York to Los Angeles flights.

Developed in New Hampshire by defense contractor, BAE Systems, the cross country passenger jets are now equipped with a laser deterrent system mounted on the plane's belly. It can identify and misdirect an incoming missile. It's being tested for Homeland Security.

Talk about scaring your average American dimwit . . .

They are thinking about arming civilian planes with anti-missile missiles?

That is the stupidest thing I have read all week.

The cost/benefit on that must be off the charts.

I think its more of a device that messes up the laser targeting stuff , that it is like an actual balistic missle to missle defence system .
Still very scary though ... I bet a determined party could do a lotta damage with one of those rocket launchers . Like shoot up a mall with nit ect.. planes are only one possible target .

I think they should be working on ideas to make a profit, avoid bankruptcy, and actually operate efficiently.

Exactly. Those factors are going to bring down AA way before al-Qaida gets a chance to.

C'mon. This forum isn't for that crap, especially PO.discussion.

Oh, but you see, this is a means to that end. With such a system in place, our commercial airliners could be considered "essential" to airspace defense and, thus, subsidized by taxpayers.

Well, even MORE subsidized than before.

Don't think it could happen? Consider the fact that most airports started out as WW2 military airstrips. We've been subsidizing air travel for a long, long time.

If its true.....A. Whats scary about it? B. Short term memory issues about 9/11 again...........Besides the human side of the 2 AA airliners crashing to bits that morning......That was a HUGE loss to that airline. The restructuring that had been taking place from 94 -01 was just about done, things looking up and bam 9/11. You should be so lucky to still have the best airline in your skies. And now they want to protect their crews and their passengers and your scared? Thats the best news Ive heard today. :)

Protect them from what?

We should really be protecting the airlines from defense contractors trying to sell a ton of garbage .

Protection from shoulder launched missiles Im assuming if I read the post correctly. Excuse me but Im already embarrased that the freaks took out 3000 of us in one morning. Big smile, anything to win. Granted, it may be a story, the shoulder launched missiles, so let us talk about what they may be REALLY protecting us from. Thoughts? Hint: I live about 40 miles from the good people of Stephenville Texas. :)

Now that's just crazy talk.

I think you watch too much television.

Oh, How would anti-missile prevent building 7 collapse?

When they want a building to come down, it will come down wether or not someone even attacks it, so all this prevention is rediculous.

ahh hah Its ok for you to bring up building 7, but not okay for me to bring up UFO's. I wish I had the time to watch too much TV....that would mean I could be home and not at work. Anyway, that orange UFO that flew by on July 4th wasnt on my TV, it was going by my front yard, heading north. Any way you Nicky are the first one Ive told....and the last. For anyone else. It was orange.....completely, like a clear orange Xmas light bulb, it was shaped like a Pearl Drop, like the old ad for that tooth polish, it was eerily silent, no flashing lights, it made me think it was a drone, or something being controlled remotely. Im 40 min from Carswell Joint Reserve base so who knows what it might have been. But its pretty weird when it happens to ya. And I thought the fireworks were great.......what a finale a freaking ufo lol
