Getting rid of the TV?

What's on your mind?

It's not a problem getting rid of TV. But as I like video games, Internet and even programming in Deplhi (currently an adventure game), getting rid of a computer will be a difficult task for me.

That's why I bought for example a chess board game, knight of the old republic starwars comics, many books and solar radio. Actually, I'm gathering games and books that will be able to bring me some fun and evasion even if internet and electricity disappear.

Hopefully, everything gonna be fine. Ahem....

We stopped watching regular TV in 1999 and don't miss it a bit (well, I do miss F1 and m-cycle racing sometimes but it's still worth it.) We watch Netflix. Seeing the amount of commercials on regular programming the odd time I'm in a hotel room or friends house reminds me how much I don't miss it...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Twilight', 'I') last had a TV in 2004 too...
What a coincidence, that was also the same year I gave up on TV.

like many others here I still enjoy DVD's and yes I spend too much time in front of a computer. 8)

Listen to music, dance, watch DVDs on the computer, read, talk, cook, play, think...

You peeps seem to have TV and TV broadcasts mixed up. I own a HD-TV with a powerful audio system. It's called a "home threater system". I watch a little PBS, otherwise the Big Screen is used for DVD's and some older VHS tapes. I buy my own entertanment. Why pay $100 to go see a concert when you can watch em in the comfort of my own home for $10 to $20. Modern music tech is a bargain. 16:9 screen in 1080p with 5.1 or DTS surround sound. You peeps don't know what your missing.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('burtonridr', 'I') have heard at least 1 person say they plan to unplug the TV for good once they switch to digital.

Anyone else?

The only thing I feel I must watch each day is the news at night... I am a news junky, even as I type this I'm browsing 3 different media sources open in 3 different tabs.

I feel like the best defense to any doomsday scenario is to be the first to know. I can attribute my strategic repositioning of assets and shifting of personal liabilities to just paying attention to the news. I'm rarely wrong, its so hard to miss the trend when you just pay attention to what is happening.

So should I unplug that old TV and bask in the sweet silence?

Use the net and the radio. I will unplug when cable gets to $70.

In the meantime I like watching the Goldilocks economy of CNBC

I would also get a pocket TV that runds on AA's..a digital one if they ever make it.

I haven't watched TV since 1975, but the computer is just as bad if not worse. If we were serious about powerdown we'd not pay our isp bill & dump the internet. Would save time & money to do without computer & internet. I guess we're all just a bunch of hypocrites...

darwinsdog : very good point. I suspect we all on peakoil.com are internet and computers addicts, at least because of peak oil, probably also for side reasons.
Finally, the only reason why I heard about peak oil was because I spend a LOT of time on my computer. For playing, programming, and Internet. I used to think that future would look like Bladerunner until I saw peakoil.com.

I hate the idea to not have any more access to a computer and Internet while Television has always looked to me as a powerfull tool to control people mind.

BTW, being forced to watch TV adverts is a worse torture then whatever they do in Gitmo(waterboarding).

Expanded cable is $52.00/month here.........no premium channels etc. When it went above 50, I really began thinking about getting rid of it and perhaps putting up a nice antenna. You can pick up about 12 stations in this area.

The only thing stopping me is the kids. Plus if TSHTF, I guess the only thing that will be transmitting is the EBS telling us where to go get food!
Viddy well, little brother. Viddy well.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('hope_full', '(')...) I can watch DVDs on my laptop but lately, I don't even have any interest in main-stream movies. Maybe it's my age but I find most movies unspeakably dull and/or foolish and/or too violent for my delicate sensibilities.

I watch DVDs too. They're however anime, no crap.
