Field Engineer work

Unread postby Uninspired123 » Fri 11 Jul 2008, 17:31:40

Hey all, I'm a recent graduate and recently got an interview with a company that is requiring me to go out into the field with a large group. The actual job title I'm looking for is "Field Engineer". I suppose going out into the field and viewing wells and reservoir's as part of the interview but I am not sure what to expect. I am not a traditional engineer but a bioengineer so I'm not sure exactly why I got this interview haha, nevertheless, could anyone here, who is in the industry or has any idea about field work, clue me in on what I should expect or what this interview might entail? I do not have experience in this field, but the job is considered a 'training' job nonetheless so I assume I won't be expected to know much anyhow. I do however know that if I have some inkling about what to expect, my confidence will be higher and I'll be able to perform better at an interview or whatever I'm expected to do on the field itself.

Thanks for all responses, it is appreciated.

I don't work in the petroleum industry, I am a Field Software Developer. Most of my life I've worked in cubicals. Believe me, you don't want that! You will make far more money in the field and not have to put up with office politics. It's great experience also. When you go back to the office after a while on the road, you really notice how whinny and lazy office workers are. You'll work hard, but you get compensated for it and you get to see a lot of places you wouldn't normally go to.

Yea, Kingcoal that's pretty much what im expecting. I'm looking forward to the physical nature of it, rather than a 'regular job', at least for the moment. Thanks for the response :)

I did a number of years after college doing service engineering for a division of Schlumberger. I ran tubing-conveyed explosives and conducted drill stem tests. Back breaking work. People are people though, politics everywhere. The money wasn't all that great and the wife spent it all. I did see some beautiful sights, sublime even, such as why they gave the Pacific Ocean it's name; it took me to Colorado and down the Mississippi River into the Gulf. So yeah, that's better than a cubicle.
