There truly is nothing that can be done about it. Hence, worrying about it is stupid.
May as well fret over the fact that we're all going to die, PO or no, someday anyway.
Organisms die, species go extinct. Species that overshoot the carrying capacity (K) of their environments go extinct sooner rather than later.
Anthropus ecocidus has exceeded K by > a full order of magnitude. Probably closer to two full orders. We have managed to pull off this cunning feat by fueling our population growth with reduced carbon. As we all know in this forum, cheap, easily obtainable reduced carbon resources are rapidly being depleted. And as they're depleted their oxidized residues, wantonly dumped into the atmosphere, is drastically reducing K. These are the simple facts of the situation. Just as none of us is going to live forever, neither has our species any future.
The cannibal ape will go the way of the countless other species our profligate gluttony has driven extinct. There is a very real possibility that human extinction will occur within the lifetimes of those already born. Certainly it will occur within the next century or two.
Why should we care? We will be dead & know nothing. Perhaps it's rational to care about the fate of our children & grandchildren but beyond that, it's really none of our business what happens after we die. Once dead we "have no longer any part in the things done under the sun." So relax & enjoy the collapse. It's going to be quite a trip!
