$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'T')he number of Americans with diabetes has grown to about 24 million people, or roughly 8 percent of the U.S. population, the government said Tuesday.

A report by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, based on data from 2007, said the number represents an increase of about 3 million over two years. The CDC estimates another 57 million people have blood sugar abnormalities called pre-diabetes, which puts people at increased risk for the disease.

LARGE and in Charge. that kid looks like he's headed for management. "i want more French Fries NOW !!"

he reminds me of Lee Raymond, the recently retired Exxon exec.

i try to eat a super-healthy diet (with the exception of Mug Root Beer & Sierra Mist). i wonder how much crap i'm consuming with "normal" produce, and how effective doing things like washing fruits & vegetables really is, in terms of washing off chemicals.

Depends on the veg/fruit. Some have more pesticide than others.

The solution is simple - kind of like the concept of powering down - but no one wants any of that! Too hard! I have no time! I need (you insert the "thing" that suits your fancy here).... blah blah blah
Bull shit.
We got fat as soon as we started eating franken food (highly processed, highly refined, highly toxic shit), quit working to produce our own food in any fashion, and decided that reheating something in the microwave was "cooking".

Learn to grow and EAT vegetables and fruits.
Make them a significant portion of most meals.
Eat three squares a day and cut out the grazing all day long.
Learn to cook - from scratch.
Quit eating fake food - fat free, nondairy, hydrogenated fat, excessive sugar, sugar free, MSG, high fructose corn syrup... all of this is toxic.

Meat (yes with fat in it), eggs, reasonable amounts of dairy, vegetables, fruits, whole grains, legumes, and honey/limited sugar - and work to prepare it a bit - will improve our national waistline AND our national health.
[steps down off the soap box and heads to the kitchen to check on the whole grain/no knead bread that is "working" in anticipation of tomorrow's normal Sunday bread baking effort]

(it's not that hard to reclaim a more simple life - more simple food - and less energy intensive life - just not as convenient or as instantly gratifying ... but then again .... no one in my family looks like those McDonalds girls or boy. )

Stop eating refined sugar.
Soda pop should be outlawed. I'm pretty positive it kills more people then cigarettes.
Remember that when you eat store bought meat, if it isn't grass fed, your basically eating corn. Not much nutrition.
I've also cut out most simple carbs.
lawns should be outlawed.

In North America, soda pop is drinking corn too. I can't understand why people do it.

Perhaps one of the reason Americans are seeing the growth in diabetes is that we have so many immigrants and it seems they are especially troubled by our high fat and high carbohydrate diets. A doctor I know claims that blacks and South Asians (India, Pakistan, etc.) are especially prone to diabetes after immigrating to Canada. So, it may not be that our diets are getting worse but we are seeing an influx of people who are not well suited to an American diet. For sure around our area here in Toronto, if you add up Asians and blacks, I bet you are talking 20% of the population.

Its not like the diet of our ancestors was so healthy, typical farm families used to eat a lot of heavy fats and dairy products.

Switch to water over pop.
You will see the difference.
I myself am considered underweight by my doctor but not to a dangerous level so my concerns are not of weight but rather my over all health.
Weight loss doesn't equal health.

If anyone paid any attention to the amount of salt in their diet they'd probably be pissed. Just a can of vegies can have over 450mg of salt for 1/2 a cup. that chicken broth you bought to get you over your cold and upset tummy? can have as much as 1700mg in 2 cups!

You think sugar is everywhere? look at the sodium content on any food label in your house! The average american eats 2400-5000mg a day easy. but they won't cut it out cause then they'd think food was too bland till their taste buds adjusted.

Yep. I've suffered from high blood pressure since my mid-20s. Not because I'm fat, it's "bad genes" as my doc says. So I eat a low sodium diet. Which means almost no processed food, no store bought bread. It forces me to have a much healthier diet than I might otherwise.

Sodium is the next transfats.
The other day I bought one of those crispy chicken sandwiches from Burger King and got a small order of French fries.
There were nearly 2,000MG of sodium just in those two items! 8O
We all know that fast food has a lot of fat and sugar, but salt is the hidden killer.

I was reading the nutritional facts(or non-nutritional facts) from McDonald's the other day, all of their burger, chicken and fries were so loaded with sodium, and fats I vowed to never eat there again. I couldn't believe it. I don't usually eat that crap anyway. I usually grab a snack from the garden. But for the occasional fast food bite, I have given that up!

I agree with most of what you say but why is fat free toxic?
I eat fat free yogurt everyday it is gluten free and it is the Walmart brand
What is wrong with fat free? Can someone care to explain?

Sometimes in order to make something fat free, they have to add lots of other harmful ingredients in order to make the item taste good.

fat free isn't toxic. The problem is fat is an essential part of your diet. People have been brainwashed into thinking fat is bad.
