I see dead people.

Unread postby VMarcHart » Wed 02 Jul 2008, 14:37:41

For the last few weeks I've been working nex to a cute suburban mall. You know, the standard AMC theaters, marry-go-around, food court, JC Penny's, etc, type of mall.

I go there for lunch. I had a smoothie today.

I see dead people. 20-something year old couples, with 1-2 small children, 1-2 toddlers, driving SUVs or Mini Vans, buying toys, eating pizza at Sbarro's, all while crude oil and gasoline just hit another record high, mortgage crisis, credit card crisis, inflation, unemployment, war, food shortage, the works. There is no way these folks will live or survive long.

I see dead people. Do you?

You never know how people react when things get tough. The dead person you see might be in the mirror....

You're just feeling the PO disconnect. Wondering how everyone can be acting like things are normal when theres a sh%tstorm bearing down on our collective asses...

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('gnm', 'T')he dead person you see might be in the mirror.
I have no dreams to survive much longer. If I do, it's shear dumb luck. :)

I can guarantee that many of the people you see as "dead man walking" are a lot more complex than your off the cuff characterization. They are real people with real lives and some of them are smarter and more resourceful than you are.

Alas, there's no need for you to tell me I'm not too smart. I'm reminded of that daily.

I think of what I have read about the British, in Hong Kong, just before the Second World War. They to live like kings, as we do, here today. Many saw the dark storm rising, but most were making too much money, having too much fun. The sad thing is won’t be over in a few years, and we will be in the camps forever.

Does knowing make you happier? Or will your last good days be filled with anguish.

I don't despise them at all. I look at them with a heavy powerless feeling in my heart. I feel like helping them, and at the same time there's little or nothing I can do, or that can be done.

I think we operate under the delusion that knowing makes us happier, smarter, better, but our last good days wind up filled with anguish. Ignorance is bliss.

Focus on tomorrow through your personal planning efforts, focus on now while cruising around.

Even though that mall is a broken system waiting to stop, and the people walking around in there aren't aware, it doesn't mean that those particular individuals are going to break with the system. So if you see them smiling today, smile with them.
Stop filling dumpsters, as much as you possibly can, and everything will get better.

And spend some time reviewing the psychology section (where this thread will be moved as soon as a mod sees it) 8)

It's full of sound advice and a long history of many people who've experienced exactly what you are experiencing.

smile! :)

heavy poweless feeling - is how I feel

those of us , ahead of the game , on boards like this , see the issue
many think nothing can be done
many think we can do something and should be doing something and WTF why our leaders are so , well , ignorant/stupid/ignoring the situation .

it will never be the same again but is doesnt't have to be this way!

so why don't they "get it" ? we can do lots now , but is has to be now, not tomorrow , nor the next day

today

Forbin

PS: don't get depressed , do your bit , each of us .

I agree with OP %100. I have friends recently purchased large mansions 30 miles away from downtown Houston. 2 cars in the garage on being an SUV.

All purchased with credit. I have another friend yuppie calling me other day how to buy a $55K BMW with a credit card. All these people have two things in common. They all are PO unaware and they are all buried to neck with debt already in their young ages.

Used to work for a large utility company in downtown Houston. My manager bought a 8 cyl Toyota Seq driving to woodlands everyday. (30 miles one way) Can you believe this? She also had a mansion being built in Conroe (35 miles away)

I will feel sorry for all these people when TSHTF.

You have to think positive! I see unemployed masses, sharecropping on a nice plantation. For a role model go to Jefferson's place in Virginia, Monticello or maybe Washington's. I disagree with you Mos on this one, knowledge is power.

I don't see them dead, either. I see them destitute, close to homeless, and barely surviving, all the while trying to get through each day in a fog of depression and utter bewilderment.

I also harbor no illusions that I won't end up as one of them. It can, and probably will, happen to virtually all of us, eventually. Very few will escape the ill effects of the changes that are looming just over the horizon.

(BTW, this is an all-time classic:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '.')..how to buy a $55K BMW with a credit card...

Of course, the most amazing thing about it is that it can actually be done.)

I understand what you are feeling VMarchart and have felt the same many times. It seems as if it is one of the stages of dealing with the magnitude of the problem.

After thinking on it for months my current thought about that feeling is it may be an emotional expression of disengaging from the reality many of us were raised in and thought was normal and would go on forever.

After I had gotten through that period I was much more accepting of what was happening and didn't fight it so hard or so often. I still have a relapse every so often but the feeling isn't as strong and it doesn't last very long, just minutes.
