Changing Your Lifestyle Can Change Your Genes

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')ere's some very good news: your genes are not your destiny. Earlier this week, my colleagues and I published the first study showing that improved nutrition, stress management techniques, walking, and psychosocial support actually changed the expression of over 500 genes in men with early-stage prostate cancer. This study was conducted at the non-profit Preventive Medicine Research Institute and the University of California, San Francisco in collaboration with Dr. Peter Carroll, Dr. Mark Magbanua, Dr. Chris Haqq, and others.

In this study, published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, we studied gene expression in biopsies from 30 men who were diagnosed with low-risk prostate cancer.

The changes included a plant-based diet (predominant fruits, vegetables, legumes, soy products, and whole grains low in refined carbohydrates), moderate exercise (walking 30 minutes per day), stress management techniques (yoga-based stretching, breathing techniques, meditation, and guided imagery for one hour per day), and participating in a weekly one-hour support group. The diet was supplemented with soy, fish oil (three grams/day), vitamin E (100 units/day), selenium (200 mg/day), and vitamin C (2 grams/day). These lifestyle changes are described more fully in my book, The Spectrum.

Good evening from Pheba, from the farm:
My daughter has twin boys. I recently watched a PBS special titled "Twins".
The show was a study done on twins over several decades.
The findings were astounding.
Come to find out that what our ancestors do decides which genes can get switched on or off.
We have something science is just learning about. We have epi-genes.
I am rusty on med. terminology, but I believe epi means on top off, or above.
They studied a European town from the 1800s.
The town had a bad famine.
The children of the townspeople were not affected, but across the board, the grandchildren were.
they had higher incidence of diabetes and other problems.
The genetic studies showed that certain genes had been turned on in the descendants of the famine victims.
Those who did not suffer in the famine did not have descendants with the turned on genes.
The study began by exploring why some identical twins can be so different.
In some cases one identical twin can be autistic or have Down's syndrome.
How can this be if they have identical genes?
They learned that for some reason the epi-genes triggered changes in one of the twins.
Interesting. I do believe we can tweek our genes by living a healthy lifestyle.
But, from what I have seen, we are truly a prisoner of our DNA.
Pheba.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'R')ecent advances in cellular science are heralding an important evolutionary turning point. For almost fifty years we have held the illusion that our health and fate were preprogrammed in our genes, a concept referred to as genetic determinacy. Though mass consciousness is currently imbued with the belief that the character of one's life is genetically predetermined, a radically new understanding is unfolding at the leading edge of science.

Cellular biologists now recognize that the environment, the external universe and our internal physiology, and more importantly, our perception of the environment, directly controls the activity of our genes. This video will broadly review the molecular mechanisms by which environmental awareness interfaces genetic regulation and guides organismal evolution.

Nice find Graeme. I too would suggest kicking up the exercise to a higher level.

And I bet there's a beneficial way to avoid any fish or animal product in the mix too.

Very minor adjustments only, of course.
