Sheesh. All this talk.
End of the world. Aliens. Earthquakes. Telepathy. False prophets.

You name it.

I think rather then worry about it or try to figure out this from that I'm just getting a bigger lock on the steel door to the bunker.

Nothing says peace of mind like 2 foot of steel with a key. 8)

I have one of those little hooky latch things on my door. I guess I'm less easily scared than some folks.

Or not surrounded by a bunch of average Americans who think the answer to all our woes are a few more rigs pumping oil.

When my grandma died about ten years ago, we had to replace the lock on the front door of her house. It'd been so long since it was locked, nobody knew where the key was. That's the way it used to be around here. Nobody locked anything. Most people left the keys in the ignition of their car so they wouldn't lose them. My how things have changed. :(

A bunker, no matter how well made, is a static defense. Ask the French about Dien Bien Phu to see how well that works.

Bunkers will often have blind spots, with approach routes not well-covered by fields of fire. However, suitable gun ports provide an attacker with opportunities to introduce problems into the bunker.

Mobility is a good thing. Perhaps not as reassuring as 2 feet of steel - but less susceptible to nasty surprises.

While you're at it, ask them about the Maginot Line.

theres nothing to be done about poor planing.

if you desire a bunker remember the 3 most important things to think about.

1)location
2)location
3) LOCATION!

On the other hand, ask the Viet Cong how well their systems worked. Their bunker systems were what kept them going, right though massive air strikes. Hell, it turned out they had major tunnel complexes right in the middle of massive US occupied areas and no one ever knew until after the war.

if someone can make it to my location undetected I deserve a nasty suprise! They'd have to be a mighty good shot seein as the cloest they could get is about 1/4 of a mile or slightly less before running out of cover.

What if they are a quarter mile off and you see they have no weapons but are just some scared and hungry family?

I'll handle each situation as is needed, just because I own a gun doesnt mean I'm a violent man.
I'll put my familys well being before strangers, but I wont neglect strangers for the sake of my family.
I'll be judged for my actions in this life in the next, so I'll choose wisely.

I'm sure you will and don't doubt your decency. But what about a hundred scared and hungry families? A thousand? I've got a real bad feeling about all of this.

Honestly, if your worried about a thousand people showing up your too close to a major population center or major route of travel.

I'm, literally, half a mile from the nearest house. I'm 2 miles from the nearest paved road. 10 miles from the nearest town which has all of 1200 people in it. I'm 12 miles from the nearest interstate and 70 miles from the nearest city with a population in excess of 10,000.

If I see thousands of people passing through my country, the shit has really hit the fan. And someone has been giving the bastards good shoes!

Our ranch is on a dead end 5 miles off the main hwy and 3 miles of that is dirt/gravel. In between our reinforced pipe gate and the highway are about 60 some odd armed hillbillies.

What worries me are all the "Big Hat No Cattle" deer hunters we have leased to over the last 30 years will show up and want refuge.
If you give a man a fish you will have kept him from hunger for a day. If you teach a man to fish he will sit in a boat and drink beer all day.

I figure, honestly, by the time people realize they should be bugging out they wont have the gas or money to do so.
