I was experimenting with ways of searching for information on Craigslist and stumbled upon a way to do it with Google. One of the queries I tested was "peak oil" -- and what is out there is really fascinating. This is sort of the grass roots level of awareness and debate, independent of any particular political or other ideology. It may be one of the best general cross sections of public attitude we have available to us online.
