Tim Russert, R.I.P.

Unread postby Denny » Fri 13 Jun 2008, 17:25:53

Its sad to see the passing of Tim Russert, of NBC. He seemed like a regular guy who did well for himself. A good family man who loved his dad so much, now maybe he'll be in the company of "Big Russ" again. He's also a sort of a neighbour, coming from Buffalo, here in the Niagara Frontier.

He died far too young, at age 58. He never looked real healthy, had that red complexion.

Very sad indeed. He always had tough questions for all politicians and spared no quarter. I always respected that about him and will miss him on Sunday mornings.

Quite a shocker to me, I'll miss him too.

Anyone remember that SNL skit when John McCain hosted a few years ago where Tim Russert was supposed to be trying to trick him into telling him whether he would run for president? Very funny.

Very sad news to hear of his death.

One down, several hundred media shills to go. Did anyone catch him interviewing Ron Paul? He must have made his handlers happy that day.

LOOK, he was a nice man and family guy. Played the media moguls cards well to have such a long career. BUT, that is IT> Just one man, not an idol or icon. GOOD LORD> I am already tired of the news of his death. Every day ppl die who have had just as much impact or more on peoples lives, affecting them positively etc.

Its just sad that they treat him like he is Jesus Christ or something. I realize he had a great career. OKAY, I get it after two hours of news about him.

For me, I just feel a little sadness because I personally enjoyed his work.

He wasn't some kind of icon or anything, he just seemed like a comparatively good journalist.

Wow. I hadn't heard until I read this thread because I've been at work all day with a restriction on campus-only websites. I thought this was going to be a joke about his career but ... damn. How did McCain and Cheney outlast him? I wonder who's going to replace him on MTP? I always loved that show. The music and host always made it seem like what they were talking about was important or mattered, regardless of the facts.

I can't believe you guys think Russert was any good as an interviewer. He so stunk. His show should have been called Press the Meat, not Meet the Press...an utterly unproductive exercise in...well--I'm too polite to say.

The most loathsome journalists are those who perfect a veneer of fake objectivity. Russert was an intellectual pip squeek, who lobbed soft ball questions at those with power and influence and heaped venom on people like Ron Paul. He attacked RP. Didn't "question" him, just attacked him. So be it, IF he questioned all of his controversial guests in the same manner.

The best of the American press is nowhere to be seen on mainstream tv. The best are never hired, or have been fired.

Yes, too sad for Russert and his family. But somebody died today in Philadelphia, in Dallas, on a highway in Iowa, in a flood, several died in a Boy Scout camp from a tornado, thousands died in recent weeks from earthquakes and typhoons in Burma and China. Somebody just suffocated from a piece of chicken lodged in their throat. Somebody just fell down the stairs. Somebody just got shot in a robbery in Tuscon, AZ. Some schmuck in Manitoba got electrocuted giving an acid bath to a swimming pool when the pump shorted out. Somebody got hit by a bus while thinking about an argument with her boyfriend and not paying attention. Somebody got eaten by a Great White shark. A little child drowned in a five gallon bucket. A despondent former employee of Bear-Stearns shot himself. A mountain climber fell off a mountain. A scuba diver got caught in kelp. A cop was shot by a creep. A fire-fighter was burned alive. A soldier got hit by an IED. Somebody had a piano fall on them. Somebody got hit in the head by a fallen driveshaft on the freeway. Somebody forgot to breath while they were sleeping. Somebody got carried away with speed balls. Somebody got hit by lightning. Somebody had their heart explode. Somebody had their cells go mutant. Somebody had a jealous lover shoot them in the head with a crossbow. Somebody even managed to get bitten by the Beaked Sea Snake, the most venomous snake in the world but it rarely bites anyone.

I watched Tim for years and he presented himself in a professional manor. I saw the RP interview... IMO he treated RP no more critically than any other guest.

A sad day no doubt.

To everyone taking this opportunity to trash the guy I say... Shame on you.

The man passed today... Have some decorum.
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

I was deeply shocked to hear this news. Tim was always such a good interviewer; tough but never mean. A blue collar Irish Catholic kid that made it good.

I am saddened by his passing.

Because Russert and other journos didn't ask the tough questions in the run up to the war in Iraq, thousands of people have needlessly lost their lives, many of whom were children. He was complicit in war crimes, and deserves ZERO respect. I would say the same about just about any mainstream journalist. Would I feel sorry if any of them died? No....why should I? I have more sense of decorum, tragedy and sadness for the hundreds of thousands who have suffered in the war, than for Russert, whose professional cowardice is partly responsible. May he instantly reincarnate as an Iraqi.
