By Debra Alban

(CNN) -- ...so-called staycations: taking time off from work to enjoy life at home.

About 1.3 percent fewer Americans are expected to fly this summer than last summer, according to the Air Transport Association.

And for the first time since the economic shock after the September 11 attacks, Americans were projected to drive less over Memorial Day weekend, the traditional kickoff of the summer travel season.

AAA Vice President Mark Brown says the slowing economy and high fuel prices "have pushed some Americans to what we call the traveling tipping point. It's clear that a small number of us may choose to stay home ... and relax with friends and family rather than take a vacation."

Having been to many places in the world (I'm still lacking Asia and South America), I'm content to stay home and work on things here in my time off. I would not travel now unless I meant to stay traveling. The world has changed.

We may all be on the road soon where we have those 10-20 essential things in our pack...

This is funny to me.

I was very close friends with a man who was born is 1890. He was born and raised on his father’s small farm about 10 miles south of the California town of Tulare. It's in the middle of the Central Valley of California south of Fresno. (Olympic Decathlon Champion Bob Mathias came from there).

What my friend told me before the turn of the 20th century; it was an all day trip to go into Tulare from his father's farm. They got up before the crack of dawn to hitch the wagon, travel the 10 miles, visit his grandmother, get supplies and go home. It was always dark before they got home They never did this more than once a month!
