Hi Ferretlover, re: Meetup.com. Sorry I've never heard of this.
I think the site I used to visit just used the members database, you could put your post code in and find other members within a chosen radius. Just thought it would be "comforting" to know I wasn't alone in my particular bit of the wilderness.
