$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('GoghGoner', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('wisconsin_cur', '')$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Revi', 'I') agree, Manu. I think I'd rather be in Mexico than the States when TSHTF. Some small town wouldn't be a bad place to be.
I speak fluent Spanish, and I like the culture.

Unless just a few people blame you for the consumption of their resource and the destruction of their way of life etc etc because you are from or spent time with or are otherwise identified with the us. If you have family there perhaps you will be alright. I would not want to be a stranger in a strange land when TSHTF.

I have been to villages in Mexico where there are no utilities (water, electricity) and I don't think there is going to be much of an affect on them from peak oil

The current violence is targeted towards the government or along the border because Americans want drugs. These border places can be just as dangerous as LA, Chicago, or Hartford. If you read through the travel alert, there has been one American tourist killed in all of Mexico due to demonstrations (it happened in Oaxaca in 2006). That person wasn't directly targeted, either. My god, do you know how many Mexican tourists have been killed in the US in the last four years? Get out, get out now. Go to Mexico!!!

1. Where does their food come from? If they are a farming community, where do they get their seed and most important what is their excess yield every year?
2. How many family members left that village in the last 20 years to make a living in the world might come back, thinking the same thing?

All that being said there may be places in Chiapas or elsewhere that might be able to care for their own. If you are culturally savy you might be able to gain acceptance over time as "one of us." I would just say that most of us are not capable of that transition and most places will not be able to accomidate too many individuals attempting to make that transition.

I think a priority should be to repair your savings. Don't treat your line of credit like an emergency backup account. In the event of a real emergency that line of credit will disappear as the Bank either goes under or pulls your line of credit. Start saving a real emergency fund. Perhaps think of it as your retirement fund but keep it liquid so that you can use it for emergencies. A disaster preparedness kit is good insurance for if things really go to pot but unless it is something you are going to make into a hobby I wouldn't go to the survivalist extreme. Prepare for a Katrina scale disaster and you're probably doing well.

If going to mexico to visit family is a priority in your life I wouldn't cut it, but if you are seriously freaking out then cut it back to 2-4 weeks. You can blame it on the recession and the price of gas. Even teachers will be effected by the recession. If you live in one of the housing bubble places like Arizona or California I would worry about the finances of your school district.

I would still take your vacations. We are going on one in November to see my husband's family that we haven't seen in years. I figure if we don't go know who knows if or when we will be able to in the future. I want him to see his family!

You still have to live your life, just prepare the best you can. There is no sense living in such fear about something you can't control.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('wellbehaved', 'W')hen I started researching peak oil 3 years ago and read the Hirsch report, I thought this can´t be true, and if it is why isn´t anyone doing anything. I think of myself as informed, but I have not been proactive about doing anything. Now that the predictions are coming true, Hirsch has been in the mainstream media, peak oil is common knowledge, I am freaking out.

I have no money saved, no supplies andcommute 32 miles a day to work. I have three children and don´t want to be an alarmist. I guess you could say I have been working through a 3 year grief process and although I am past denial, I can´t seem to mobilize myself to do anything.

My daughter is going to France this year, my family is going to Mexico for 2 months and my question is, should I get as much cash together, cancel our family vacations and plan for the apocalypse?

I need reasonable advice, a place I can start so I can feel like I have some control. My husband and I are both teachers and have very little debt except for our house. We have a home equity line that we could pull out some cash on.

HELP!

Don't go into debt. Get out of debt if you can.

Visit your family. You don't say what the trip to France is all about, but daughter should be encouraged to finance it herself and not have you pay for it.

Do you know how to cook? Pick the two things your family eats the most (probably some combination of corn, rice, beans, wheat) and buy a large sack of one of the two (at least 20#). You've spent maybe fifteen or twenty bucks (probably less). Freeze whatever you got (you can repackage it in gallon freezer bags if you don't have a deep freezer.

Research long term storage methods (buckets, etc.). You can get some plastic buckets and gamma seals cheap, or you can put the stuff in canisters or keep them in the freezer bags, depending on what it is. But figure out where you're going to store what you bought. Then store it, outside the freezer (you'll need the room).

Next time you go to the store, get a sack of the next thing on your list. Do like you did with the first item, repackage, freeze, then store. Now you have a large amount of the two things you eat most.

If you didn't pick beans, now's a good time to learn to eat beans. Get a sack of beans and do the same as whatever you got before, but save some out to learn to cook with them.

You see where I'm going with this? It doesn't have to be huge or difficult or scary. One sack, each time you go to the store. If you want to pick up an extra few cans while you're there, so much the better. Buy only what you eat, in as simple a form as possible.

If you don't know how to cook, learn. Plant some fruit trees if you can. I wouldn't start a garden until you get back from vacation if you're going for two months.

You can do this even if your husband isn't on board with you. My husband and kids don't want to hear about bad news, but I'm the one who buys the food, so I get to pick what we eat.

Good luck!

Why don't you wait until Cantarell crashes to the point where we get a good advanced look at what post peak oil life is like before proclaiming Mexico as a good bugout.

It already is one of the most corrupt countries on the planet.

Yes. Fix the money problem, Get a second job and work 7 days a week perhaps at your local supermarket. Also do not go on holidays, humanities time for holidays is over.
