French Movies

There are some very good movies coming from France lately. Luc Besson's Angela is a gem. It's in black and white and subtitled so don't bother downloading it unless you speak French. It is amazingly fresh and original. I can't say any more about it because it would give away the surprises and they are delightful surprises. . Another one is 13 Tzameti Tzameti is the Georgian word for 13. The movie was made by a Georgian immigrant to France. A truly riveting film, much darker than Angela but riveting just the same. I've read that Hollywood is making an American version. It's nice to see that cinematic creativity is thriving in France.

on a side note, I had a strange dream last night that the marvelous French present to the US, the Statue Of Liberty, was sold for a vast sum and carted away to pay American bills.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('pstarr', '
')Bresson's Fifth Element is cheesy and kind of confused but I love the production values, costumes and loopy dialog, especially Chris Tucker. The rest, Milla Jovovich, Gary Oldman, Ian Holm, and especially Bruce Willis, seem a bit dazed but also charmed, by the entire spectacle.
I'm watching it. Cheesy indeed. Sci-fi kitsch to the max, but kitsch on purpose. Sort of a spoof on Blade Runner, Star Wars and Total Recall with a little Raiders Of The Lost Ark thrown in for seasoning. It actually is very charming. I can imagine Besson and crew laughing their asses off every night after production hours.

Btw, French numbers never sounded so sinister, un, duex, trois, until you've heard them in 13 Tzameti.

It's interesting you should say that, because at today's prices, you would get about $224,000 for the copper, and $87,500 for the steel. I don't think it's quite that desperate yet...

La Vie en Rose was, uh, unnecessarily long. REALLLLY long.
