Letter to editor in my local paper - nutty!

Unread postby lizzybeth » Mon 09 Jun 2008, 11:25:53

OK, this guy wrote in and said a lot of crazy stuff. One that sticks out is on drilling in Alaska/under ice caps etc. He claims that the oil under there is hot and may be the cause of global warming. He offers proof by saying the caribou population has expanded by 26% near the Alaska oil pipelines because the caribou hang out by the pipes to get warm. Does anyone know if this is true?
He also complained about the Chinese hoarding oil - a reference to them developing a Stategic reserve of their own?

Here's a link that might prove useful re: warm oil from the Alaskan fields:

Trans-Alaska Pipeline

But it's ludicrous to blame global warming on this. Why not blame it on the heat from billions of running automobile engines? (As opposed to the CO2 emitted by them.)

Yes, I believe I've read that the Chinese are developing their own strategic reserve. And why not?

Nobody tell that guy that the centre of the earth is molten iron or he will go ballistic.

The deeper oil is the hotter it is. One of the problems that had to be solved when drilling for ultra deep oil was designing drilling and pumping rigs that could take the heat.

I hope the European Union has some sort of strategic reserve; seems to make good sense ...

All OECD countries are supposed to maintain reserves and most EU members are also in the OECD.

Strategic petroleum reserves are a particularly stupid idea.

At great cost, they don't change anything.

What they are actually intended for is war use. Like wars are going to solve our problems.

Anyway, back to that letter: if only we could burn human craziness in our engines! The supply would be inexhaustible.

The EIA produced a report for Alaska Senator Ted Stevens on ANWR: Analysis of Crude Oil Production in the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.

Definitely not what he (or his constituents) wanted to hear: 8-12 years before actual production.

The European Union has a strategic reserve, nay a never-ending supply, of useless politicians, thats for sure.

Gasmon

I agree. The EU has a plentiful supply of stupidity. For example here in my country we've decreased domestic food production and increased food imports because of EU regulations, which is the exact opposite of what we should be doing.

Anyway, back to the topic.
