They are mostly a bunch of women whose beauty has passed them by through the years, what they have left is beauty of mind. Good enough for me.

That's lovely, PMS. Beauty of mind is even harder to achieve (or maintain), IMO.

I live in Costa Rica. In this forum, of the most active members, I think they may be 3 posters (at most) that live within 1000 km from my home... but actually Texas isn't that far away. However I'm expecting the death of the Airline "middle class" industry.

I think it would especially helpful to meet on a local/regional level and compare notes about planning, etc based on the resources within our areas.

Speak for yourself, dude!

I hear what you're saying. The one-on-one or serial meetings would be so much cooler than trying to herd cats, so to speak.

But, more germane to your OP, wouldn't it be nice to actually hug some of the people we spend a lot of time with? Or would it be weird?

I'd hug you and say, "you couldn't possibly have been better looking when you were 19"

More possibilities for organizing/planning events:

Morning/afternoon/evening seminars/lectures
-What is Peak Oil? An introduction to Peak Oil and explanation of its impact on civilization. This would work well as a first lecture as it would serve to educate guests/family/friends/neighbors and the Mayor, should he show up sober.
-Self-Sufficiency seminar, would do well for an afternoon event. depending on attendance, several lectures could be offered on topics from organic gardening and free range livestock, to solar hot water, to mending fences.
Make videos, get them up on Peak TV.
-Evening would get into Advanced Peak Oil. Recession/depression, food, fuel, energy shortages, Olduvai type stuff. Or just have a BBQ instead.

The Self-Sufficiency seminar would be something a large number of people could get involved in. Everyone has their own thing, be it baking bread or making pottery. It may be practical to brings things for show and tell. Getting exposed to new ideas and new methods would be practical and informative. Several ways to do this. anyone who wants gets a time block, say 20-30 minutes to present his thing. Have a Q&A period, leaving more involved discussion for the BBQ. 6 hours from noon to 6 PM dinner allows room for a couple of dozen people. Sure would make for interesting conversation

Dinner could be made interesting. If attendees were close, a pot luck may be practical. Pstarr's canned Dinty Moore, DrBang's smoked turkey, I make a mean corned beef, salad from everyone's garden. Have a Spam Lamb.

After talking of doom and gloom all day, a Roast may be in order. May as well have some fun while your at it.

The location for such an event can be done with hotels, restaurants, fraternal organizations and some private homes. Nothing wrong with a combination, its good to get some exercise and change of scenery.

I would love to meet folks as well...in fact, we've met several a few years back when I used to be in charge of the Meetup.org's PEAK OIL group in Chicago a few years ago, in early '05. I keep asking folks if they want to meet up, here, we could make it at one of my garden centers. (we have 19 this season.)

I should probably do a "Chicagoland shout-out" for peakoilers here, but, heck, we'll see..

I told you, you are always welcome at Maggy's Farm PMS, I doubt we'd be worth the fare tho...

Thanks to PO.com, I have friends all over the country with whom I could crash if I ever needed to! (I can work hard and am a good cook, too.)

My $0.02

I say we take I-35 to the dead center of the USA & stop the cars, block it in both directions...pitch tents & start the grills.

THAT'S where our meet-up party should take place. :)

35 is a highway that runs from Minnesota to Texas. It's also the highway that TPTB want to widen & expand into Canada & Mexico...UGH! :(

I think we should all move to a far western state (not bordering other countries) and we can live next to each other and grow vegies and raise cows.

We could have lunch... Image

On a shares website I used to go on but now can't be bothered with as there's no point! Taking the reality pill really does turn things upside down. Gulp!
Anyway, you could put your post code (zip code) in and find other members in your area, I would love to know that there were some people nearby. (sorry, there'll be a name for the software but I don't know it)
Any chance of such a thing?

Are you referring to MeetUp.com?

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Ferretlover', 'A')re you referring to MeetUp.com?

Yep, .com, .org, whatever it was back then. It would be nice to continue to have some social contact outside of the board with fellow peakoilers, especially since I live in a rather large city..

It might be nice to have a peakoil.com meet-n-greet for Chicagoland at one of my garden centers, because that's way more practical than a bar or restaurant.

We can grill in the parking lot whilst picking out fruit trees (which I have at 25% off right now.)
and grape vines. Or tomatoes. whatever...
