I sometimes wonder when they'll be turning the lights out.

2030? 2050? Later? Earlier?

They must understand it's just a matter of time. It's all so temporary and of course they are aware of it too. These are really intended to be monuments, and as monuments some are really fantastic!

But it's really only a steel and glass Bedouin encampment.

One thing in Dubai's favor is they are trying to make some of these skyscrapers "green". Not sure how green they really are, though.

Public transit: Couldn't find anything on it. But here's some stuff from an American visitor who, accustomed to the wonderful public transit and road system in the US, wrote the following on the roads/layout. It's all under the title "The Top 20 Reasons Not to Live in Dubai"

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')1. There is no standard address system making mail-to-the door delivery impossible. In fact, it makes anything nearly impossible. The taxi driver, here for only two days, and having learned English from old Beatles albums has no clue where your house is. He won’t tell you that of course, he’ll just keep calling and saying, “Okay, okay. Yeah, yeah.” When you purchase something that requires delivery they do not have an address line, but a box where you are expected to draw a map. Not able to draw a map? Explain like this: I live on the street after the airport road, but before the roundabout. Go past the mosque and make a U-turn.
...

17. The roads are horribly designed. Driving ten minutes out of the way to make a U-turn is not uncommon. People are not able to give directions most of the time (remember reason #1), and the maps are little help because most have few road names on them, if any. Where is interchange four? You just have to hope you got on the freeway in the right place and start counting because they are not numbered. Miss it and you’ll likely end up on the other side of town before you are able to turn around and go back.

If you can't design a city without road names or addresses, I'm taking a shot in the dark and saying their public transit system is sub-(American) par.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', '
')One thing in Dubai's favor is they are trying to make some of these skyscrapers "green". Not sure how green they really are, though.

#20 actually:

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', ' ')
20. Dubai is far from environmentally friendly. Ever wonder how much damage those manmade islands are doing to the delicate ocean ecosystem? Coral reefs, sea grasses, and oyster beds that were once part of protected marine lands lie choked under a barrage of dredged up sea sand. Consider the waste that occurs from erecting buildings on top of these sand monsters and from the people that occupy them coupled with the lack of an effective recycling program and you have an environmental disaster on your hands. Add to this more gas guzzling SUVs than fuel-efficient cars on the road and the need for 24-hour powerful air-conditioning and its evident that the environment is not high on the priority list of the UAE.

Not exactly a systematic and scientific overview but just a general picture from an American.

Dubai has the right idea, it's just that no one in their right mind, Muslims excluded, would want to live there. Actually, many Muslims probably see Dubai as an affront to their faith and would like to see the infidels vanquished, so not even they would want to live there.

I have a friend that did a lot of work in Dubai as a contractor. Man does he have stories! Let's just say that if you get out of line, you may never be seen again. Dubai, no thank you. You are nice looking, but too hot to handle.

I read that Dubai is going to be THE vacation resort for the rich and famous. I have seen some other pictures of buildings that look like horns-I guess this is some new kind of architecture-to me it looked sinister, but then again I'm not part of the rich and famous (LOL). Its also been lauded as a very "neutral" muslim location-where Jew and Muslim can co-exist, go to school, work etc.-we will see....

The first picture on this thread looks evil.

Arabs :
"Come here , do business, and live on an island !". "You will not be alone there will be millions like you" ."Not that they will care about you, you will be no more a community than a swarm of locusts, gathering on the food, in reality there isn't even food here , all we can offer is a capitalist orgy of comfort and symbols of power, all for you" "Come here to feel powerful !"

Just stop already

End.
Of the world :)
http://paimei01.blogspot.com/
One day there will be so many houses, that people will be bored and will go live in tents. "Why are you living in tents ? Are there not enough homes ?" "Yes there are, but we play this Economy game". Now it's "Crisis" time !Too many houses! Yes, we are insane!

Actually, less than 15% of Dubai's GDP (the province is not an oil producer) but their economy is mostly services (hence the scrapers).

The artist's impressions always give you the bird's eye view of Dubai as if you lived on the 100th floor of a super luxury building with the rest of the world at your feet. The reality is that the starting price tag on the 1st floor is still $2 mio down, and utility payments for the rest of your life! How do you like dem views?

p.s. when no condensation is occuring air cools at 5.5 degree Fahrenheit per 1000 feet (1 degree Celsius per 100 meters), so some of these super sky scrapers - up to 2400-3000 ft. high - hope to use this effect in future designs (still on the drawing board) to use wind and cooler air atop these buildings to lower heating and cooling costs overall. Some say they may be able to export net energy, but those claims remain yet to be seen? Needless to say they need a lot of energy to build these super sky scrapers to begin with.
The organized state is a wonderful invention whereby everyone can live at someone else's expense.
