Bananas Going Extinct

Unread postby eastbay » Fri 30 May 2008, 23:20:24

If someone already mentioned this article about bananas going extinct in the next few years... well, here it is again.

This is a perfect example of how we humans need to tone it down and give the earth a rest for a few thousand years so it can heal.

There is no cure. They all die as it spreads, and it spreads quickly. Soon -- in five, 10 or 30 years -- the yellow creamy fruit as we know it will not exist. The story of how the banana rose and fell can be seen a strange parable about the corporations that increasingly dominate the world -- and where they are leading us.

Thanks. Missed it.

Well actually I saw it, read the headlines and had no idea that the posting in the PFTF section pertained to bananas going extinct.

It's creepy. But then again, we can't cry too hard over what we shouldn't have had in the first place.

Besides that, fuel is needed to import bananas and pina and the rest of the tropical so they may go extinct for many of us just from PO.

I recently watched this movie, Life and Debt, and it talked in part about multi-nationals monoculturing bananas in Jamaica. It's not just about food, but that plays a large part in the dismantling of the country. The footage of the dairy farms pouring out their good milk because of imported milk powder (really not healthy) is startling. I highly recommend the movie.

I vote that we change the name of this thread to "Eastbay Goes Bananas" and see what kind of play it gets.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'W')hat do Osama bin Laden and Chiquita bananas have in common? Both have used their millions to finance terrorism.

From here:

Sounds like good reading: When Bananas Ruled the World

I've never had anything but a mass-produced banana. If I never had one again, it wouldn't bother me. Fascinating history, about which I had no idea until recently.
