The Myanmar Tourism Board

Visit Mystic Myanmar They have fascinating ancient ruins and a gorgeous landscape. You might even get to see the Army killing peasants and Buddhist monks. Of course the country is named now after the current regime. It used to be Burma. A lot of people seem strangely reluctant to call it Myanmar. Mostly English speaking countries. The current name, Myanmar, is derived from a dominant ethnic strain and does go back for many Centuries. The place seems to be a nightmare of ethnic tensions. But we've seen a lot of those, haven't we? So if you are the traveling, adventurous type, they do seem to want you to visit, as long as you aren't a journalist.

Most locals seem to welcome visitors too.
Just make sure you support small privately owned businesses.
Also bring some news papers etc and leave them on the cafe tables etc when leaving. Locals don't get much news and this is appreciated.

Well thanks for the implied complement. 
I watched the new Rambo movie, quite entertaining and as someone said, this is the one that should have been called There Will Be Blood. Yikes! I know that the regime there is brutal. There are supposed to be about 800,000 people in forced labor, i.e. slaves and the Monk protests were put down fiercely, and so on. But the wanton slaughter portrayed in the movie was incredibly vicious. Was it Hollywood Hyperbole? I took the cruelty shown in Hotel Rwanda and Blood Diamond to accurate depictions of what really happened in Rwanda and Sierra Leon, but my guess is that the Rambo flick may be Stallone going for the jugular at the expense of reality. Dang, I saw that, but it was 13 years ago. I'm going to watch it again, thanks. Btw, the point of my thread title was that it seems so incongruous to see a quaint tourism advertisement from a place like Burma. It's sort of like the Mexican tourism board ads we hear here in San Diego to visit when tourists are being raped and murdered by drug gangs and corrupt Mexican cops. Only a fool would go to Rosarito Beach for a fun filled weekend now. If I need cheap dental work I'll go to Tijuana, catch a cab directly to the dentist's office and another directly back, but that's it.IMDB

I'm thinking most movies in tough times are escapes. The ones in good times are too.
Where in that continuum do you think we are now?
