Since the AP wire story hit, mods have been much more heavily editing posts, removing profanity, and so on.

There now appears to be an automatic filter on.

Is there any link to what is now forbidden?

I guess it was only a matter of time before PO.com went from the wild west to a mild run of the mill site.

I enjoyed the old PO.com.

I hope the flood of newbs enjoys the new, tamer, more serious and respectful and all things decent PO.com as much . . .

Yes, the filter has been reactivated and we have been busy busy busy trying to keep up with the traffic load.

There are no new policies, however due to the flood of new visitors/posts we are having to move quickly to keep some sense of order amongst the chaos.

If anyone feels their toes have been stepped on, we recognize your concern and apologize that we are unable to stop for discussion or back up for re-dos at this time.

Thank you for your patience!

I'm not bent out of shape.

I'm just more of a "say what you want how you want" kinduv guy.

PO.com is great, and I support any needed changes, even if they don't appeal to me.

So am I.

The difference between us is that you would sacrifice passing the message of Peak Oil to those offended by profanity... & I would not.

A point which can itself be argued of course.

A curse has fallen from my own lips on occasion... but there is no reason to be vulgar here.

Besides, I have a feeling that depending on where you live, the post-peak future will provide ample opportunity for all of us to curse a blue streak.

You don't wanna cheapen that moment do you?

I agree with you on this.

Of course, we probably disagree as to how much good we can do spreading the message.

After you take out the profanity, the threats to kill each other and the discussion of specific illegal acts, there's still a surprising amount of good stuff here.

Fear not. It's still fun.

Actually I doubt that.

Is s.h.i.t (shit) allowed? cuss it's almost a trademark, if TSHTF will change to TCHTF it will not be easily remembered by those that have known about it for years... it will make more chaos that it "prevents"!

also f.u.c.k. was changed to (fuck) Fark... which I don't know the meaning. o_O

should I use the scientific "copulate"? cuss f.uck is used in another sense or definition than Fornication Under Consent (of the) King.

I suggest that a [word deleted] tag appears wherever some word was moded, so that we know which words are "unpolite"... a way for mods to be honest while doing their job.

On the contrary, it is coming with pleasing speed.

Do you catch a whiff of hot, buttered popcorn? It is the harbinger of much that I have anticipated.

zensui, Spanish is your first language, right. Just cuss in Spanish if you want to.

But really think through the extent to which cussing is a useful communication tool.

The English language is filled with better ways to express ideas and thoughts. It's loaded with wonderful words so many of which are orders of magnitude better suited for the art of human expression than words that cause ill feelings.

Swearing in speech and in print is in itself a harsh means of communicating. If a swear word seems appropriate in print, turn to the online thesaurus for a synonym thereby allowing kids to read the posting. Piece of cake. :)

But I know these habits are tough to break. Like smoking. 8O

OK then. What about racial and ethnic slurs?

I would really hate for people to get turned off by the essential message of Peak Oil if this site continues to get spammed by the misanthropes among us who enjoy spreading their hatred of people who do not look like themselves. It makes us all look like nutcases which isn't the case but I would argue that any debate about race or whatever doesn't need profanity and also doesn't need offensive slurs. If someone can give me a good justification for that, then please provide one.

Actually, big_rc, there has been an impressive decline in this sort of thing recently, and I look forward to it continuing.

People can discuss any racial issue they like without using slurs or excessive profanity.

I thought the recent African American perspectives thread was relatively civil compared to prior discussions of the same subject matter.

If you would like to discuss this topic further or make suggestions, please PM me.
