Dr. Smalley’s Website and Video

www.smalley.rice.edu

There’s a video presentation here by a Nobel Prize winning scientist with impeccable credentials, that presents the energy issue in such a way that it makes it damn-near impossible for a conscious human being NOT TO conclude, that any politician who isn’t talking about and leading the way to new energy, is a flaming and dangerous charlatan.

Dr. Smalley doesn’t say that directly. He doesn’t have to. That’s the beauty. You’ll “get itâ€

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'H')e says straight out it will take PRESIDENTIAL leadership...

I think therein lies the real problem. The Bush haters pile on Bush - but the simple fact is, no president or serious candidate in the past 25 years has really done or said much - if anything - on this issue.

Lots of stupid ineffectual tokens - like Clintons $123,000 folly to light up the Christmas tree one year with solar in midwinter when the average sun hours per day was 1.2. In fact, I cannot recall any candidate for any office really addressing the issue in a realistic way - almost always, the few times it is addressed is in bashing their opponents or using scare tactics (with no follow through).

i think therein lies the real HOPE. very very soon it is going to become obvious to everyone that any politician not talking about and leading the way to new energy is a flaming and dangerous charlatan. so, the energy issue will take the legs right out from under a shit like bush, who is still in the dark ages chiefly doing nothing but loving and protecting the cheap-labor agenda of the right.

energy issue gets the politicos out of our way who are holding us back from real R&D needing done, and then we can solve the energy issue with them out of the way.

"the energy problem" finally solves "the government problem" which in turn solves "the energy problem"

it's win/win

we get better energy and better government

i get more encouraged every day

Anyone know of an alternate download source for this? I get a 404 on the movie link....

BTW, I hope the Buckminsterfullerene he's holding up isn't his champion for the future. They just found out that Bucky-balls are causing brain damage to Salmon.

Doh! Silly scientists. They mean so well.

Back to the drawing board.

before anybody gets me wrong here, i personally believe we need to both find new energy AND get our heads screwed on straight about how we live upon sacred mama earth's back.

i would be the last person to say living beyond sustainability is an acceptable idea. but one needs an energy source even to live sustainably, right?

A little bird tells me there is a new Smalley interview on the way!
The problem is, of course, that not only is economics bankrupt, but it has always been nothing more than politics in disguise... economics is a form of brain damage.

Many thanks AnnaLivia.
I watched Dr. Smalley's video over the weekend and it was a real pleasure to listen to someone who is inspired with a drive to do something about the looming energy crisis instead of just sitting back and saying we are all doomed.

If you haven't yet watched the video it is well worth the time

I also agree with Dr. Smalley' emphasis on solar energy since it has enormous potential when combined with improved technology. Probably nothing will ever replace the convenience of being able to fill a car with petrol but I'm not yet convinced that disaster and mayhem is inevitable post peak. Perhaps we should all spend less time staring into the half empty glass and more time trying to garner support and funding for the kind of initiatives being proposed by Dr. Smalley.

We need someone to volunteer to transcribe a new Smalley interview.

Anyone interested please contact myself or EnviroEngr.

Thanks!
