Here it is again for the newbies and others who may have missed it.
Oil, Smoke & Mirrors.

Long live people like Heinberg who have the mental capacity to see the links and the balls to come out in such a big way about it.

Oil, Smoke & Mirrors (Part 1 of 5)

I've been watching some of the veteran's tales about Iraq today. Don't they know this war was all about oil? What do they think they will be able to accomplish there? Seems hopeless to me.

It will be very interesting come January 2009 - Barack Obama installed in the WH and oil at $5.00 - $6.00/gallon. Is he still going to be quick to bring home all the troops or will he have second thoughts by then?

The US has built some awfully massive "enduring" bases over there.

He will leave the troops there or he will be taken out.
Massive Human Dieoff must occur as a result of Peak Oil. Many more than half will die. It will occur everywhere, including where you live. If you fail to recognize this, then your odds of living move toward the "going to die" group.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Cashmere', 'H')e will leave the troops there or he will be taken out.

If there is a movement of troops, I think it will be referred to as a "redeployment" from the hot areas to the bases being built there as (or if) the Iraqi government troops become more able to carry out the hot missions. We will stay there in a "support" capacity and continue to harden our bases there. We've painted ourselves in a corner on this one. No oil = collapse. They call it a vital national interest for a reason. Obama knows this.

I had always thought that by the time the Dems re-capture foreign policy that there will be compelling reason to maintain troops in Iraq.

I'm betting that oil prices rise so high, so fast that world leaders, perhaps initiated by Obama, will be willing to convene a global energy summit. Should this occur while the US has a large contingent of troops remaining in Iraq, it means the US will have more clout in any bargaining or deal-making that goes down.

And it seems already clear that a global energy summit is necessary. There's no way that the Chinese can continue to develop a US-style car culture. And there needs to be some serious planning for future global development that takes into account a greatly reduced energy budget. And there needs to be some serious co-operation in the development and deployment of alternative energies. Nothing compares to oil and gas, but this is no reason to forego R&D and a sensible re-think of what sort of infrastructure will serve us all best.

Winston Churchill once famously remarked that "America can be relied upon to do the right thing once she has exhausted all the alternatives".

I think we've gotten there finally, thanks to BushCo.
