')Weeeelll, if you point a laser at the right spot on the moon you'll get a bounce back from a reflective array - it was left there by the Apollo guys for measuring Earth/Moon distances.

How do you know the apollo guys put it there?
Mainly because it's still working.
The russians would have left a smoking crater, the chinese one would have broken as soon as you'd taken off the wrapping, and the british one would have been very innovative but would have fallen off the launch-pad under its own weight.
