Running out of Oil

Unread postby American » Sat 24 May 2008, 16:12:16

My opinion is we have plenty of Oil that can be tap if the Enviromenlist would stay out of it. They can drill in my back yard if need be, in fact wish I had a few back there now.

There is plenty of Oil in Alaska if we would just drill for it. There is the new field that covers portion of four Western States that hasn't even been tapped yet. I read from an Oil Company exec. that there was billions of barrels in that area.

But you can be sure that some envirolmenlist will block the drilling where ever they want to drill in that area.

I wasn't going to respond beause this is obviously meant to inflame people here but here goes:

The simple fact that the oil in Alaska specifically ANWR is only enough to feed the USA enough for like 2 years (I think, experts on the board can correct me). And "billions" of barrels of oil is only enough to feed the world for tens of years, wont take us past the middle part of the century(once again experts on the board can correct me on this).

Typical American lol. Nice username. It fits your ignorance perfectly. You do realize that any oil we discover will be used up within a few months. Not to mention it would take years to bring it online. And then of course the cost of getting the oil out is ridiculously expensive due to the fact that there are huge shortages of rigs and crews to operate them. Get a clue man. The earth is not an oil filled nugget. Instead of making a point you just made yourself look stupid

The world uses more than 30 billion barrels a year and of that 30 billion the US uses 8 billion a year. A field like ANWR would fill the US's needs for less than a year only it would be strung out over 20 years making the impact on our daily lives negligible. In the world need 300+ billion barrels in the next ten year. That is like whole other Saudi Arabia and then some. Drilling is not the answer. We have to find a way do with less or perish.

We sure do have lots of oil. Some estimate trillions of oil equivalent in the ground right now, from shale to deep oil (5 miles below the surface, in some cases). The problem is that it is not easily accessible and requires significant time and energy to extract.

Put another way, let me give you this analogy. Say I were to offer you $100 million. You say, "oh boy, I'm rich!" You can do whatever you want with the money. There's a catch, however. You only get to take out $10 per day. The remaining oil we have in the ground works in much the same way.

No matter how much I try to explain that to people, they can't seem to wrap ther head around the fact that the world uses 30 billion/yr.

Get ready for a lot more of this. We are such a small minority of Peak awareness. To the masses this site is basic lunacy.

"Dont worry, there is plenty of oil. We just need to drill for it!"

Yeah, thats the ticket!

Or my other favorite of all time....

"When the price gets high enough, they will uncap all those thousands of wells in Texas and Oklahoma just waiting to be tapped."

Speak for yourself, I live in Canada. I would love to go out and get an assault rifle, but that ain't happening anytime soon. Handguns only go so far. I guess I could buy a Desert Eagle, but I'll bring that topic over to the prepartion board.....
