$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('', 'I') thought the boat is most efficient when planing at crusing speed ??
does anyone know ??
Sad to say, there is no magic sweet spot in a boat for most efficient speed, its always the case that slower is more efficient.
You can actually move a huge barge at a low speed with little power.
Its a lot like the aerodynmaic drag problem, just worse by an order of magnitude, the power need with boating increases at the square of the speed. Go three times as fast with the same boat and you'll burn fuel at nine times the rate. Cut your speed in half and you cut power needs by three-quarters, thus being twice as efficient.
Cut your speed to a quarter of what you want to be travelling and you'll only use 1/16 the fuel rate per hour, which means you'll be four times as efficient, but also likely four times as frustrated.
But, one happy note. Two years ago at a cottage, the boat motor wouldn't start, so I used the canoe and really enjoyed the challenge and the quietness. I felt like an Algonquin of old or a coureur-de-bois. Now, I only use the motor boat with others who don't feel safe in the canoe.
