No man made lakes for me, thanks.
I do however have access to the ocean and although I currently have a two seater sit-on-top fishing kayak, it isn't really comfortable to spend a longer time in.

So if I want to still have a larger boat later on to go fishing, I am wondering about the options that are available;

1) sail boat - might be an option although I have to get under bridge on the way out to the ocean so only smaller version would be practical. This is not a preferred option.
2) electric motor - can be used on dingies. Not that suitable out on blue water so not a preferred option.

Are there any alternatives? i.e. are there electrical motors for larger boats (i.e. 6 meter boats) that can be used in combination with petrol engine? (i.e. petrol for transport and then electrical for short distance moving around or trolling)

Any motors running on LPG?

Excuse me if I don't shed any tears for anyone who has enough money to throw into a personal boat / yacht. I guess complaining about fuel prices has officially become the nation's 2nd most popular pastime or is it now the 1st?

I honestly remember reading a thread about someone complaining how fuel costs is making it expensive to fly private jets!

Buy a frigging kayak - even better for your health!! Use the spare money to help pay any debt that you might still have. If you have no debts, lucky you, use the money to prepare for when things get really ugly. My goodness, I hope there are not many of those around!!!

I am not dreading ALL the effects of Peak Oil (well, maybe down the line ...). If it causes that PLAGUE of jet-skis to be abandoned, I will be so happy! I see them in quiet waters that are breeding and foraging grounds for herons, egrets, and other water birds, places where they are NEVER supposed to go. It's horrible to be watching the wildlife foraging in some back bay flee in terror from some idiot in a jet-ski.

And I hope most ATVs get abandoned as well. There are some legitimate uses for these - but joyriding by overweight 15 year old boys is not one of them. Those guys need to be using their muscles.

FYI: when I was little, all we had was a 14" boat with a 5hp motor. But, no! Now you gotta have a $40,000 bass boat.

Oh, I do have a boat. It's a 15" 1960 (speedboat/ hand layed fiberglass) with a 1963 40hp Big twin. ele start without a charging system. I got $500 into her. Runs great.

Many of the larger boat owners (30 Plus Feet) in my area use their boats for low speed cruising, use them as floating camps, use them as floating base stations, or only use them occasianally, so fuel price isn't a big issue. Many larger boat owners also own waverunners and/or other smaller boats for fishing, waterskiing, tubing, high speed cruising etc. Some of the out-of-towners taht their boats at local marinas don''t use them more than a few times per season.

Many people with trailerable boats have towed them to the gas stations for decades since marina gas prices are so high. This also gives you the opportunity to wash the bottom of your boat. Many boats with outboards also use portable tanks which the owners fill at the stations. The portable rolling gas caddy fueling stations have been popular for years due to the price of marina fuel.

The people that use their large boats, house boats or pontoon boats as floating camps save a lot of money in comparison to owning a lake front home or camp. We lived in our 32 foot Carver moored at the marina or my dock when I was building my home. I built my dock before I started building my home.

Some of my fishing boats are actually quite economical since I mostly troll, drift or troll with a small kicker motor.
