The Mist

Unread postby PenultimateManStanding » Sat 22 Mar 2008, 15:01:44

The movie, based on Stephen King's novella, is extremely shocking and horrifying. Not too many of King's works have translated well to cinema. There is an atmosphere that he creates with words that doesn't always lend itself to the screen. Carrie, Tommyknockers and Firestarter were done pretty well, but a lot of them became duds on screen. This one, The Mist, I expected to be another dud but was instead blown away. Oh yeah, there was another one done recently that was also intense and effective, 1408 with John Cusack. Whew, that was chilling to the bone.

Great story, one of those I like to read every 2 or 3 years. PMS, I looked it up once you recommended it, ( I'm one of those who hasn't been impressed with the adaptations ), and it says it won't be released on DVD till the 25th, do you's get stuff early out there or is your review from seeing it on big screen?

I downloaded it via bittorrent. I saw 1408 on a DVD from Blockbuster. That's a must see also.

"The Shawshank redemption" was another very good movie that had Kings name in the credits. "The Mist" was a childhood favorite btw.

right you are, that was a good movie. I'm waiting to see what they will do with the one about the med student who got washed up on a deserted shore and ate his limbs.

I liked the movie ending better than the one in the book.

I read the short story on my first underway in the coast guard. It was definately scary. Especially in the thick fog in the deep ocean far out to sea. Cool story.

I've been looking forward to this one. After reading the book 15 years ago, it now seems like a giant metaphore what we could be facing as a world this century....

Too many standard horror components.
The ending was great though. Wouldn't waste my time reading the book version though. King's books tend to be slow and terribly boring. The only movies that come out well are the ones that deviate from the story. i.e. Shining with Nicholson is soooo much better than that crap version that came out as mini-series (following the book to the letter.)

Micki, You really seem to hate King's novels. Personally I love them. I enjoy the way he explores the minds of his characters. I don't find them slow at all.

It really is just a matter of taste.

It was interesting to watch the blame game the characters went through in The Mist as they became more and more desperate. That was well done. The ending was just tragic.

Saw the Mist about two weeks ago. The ending was very good, wont spoil it but I knew something like that was coming.
I think King gets it when it comes to how people react in strange or alien situations and this movie did that very well.

ugggh. that was depressing. the ending was much more horrific than the book. but it isn't( hard to see how something like that could happen very easily. (pandamic, etc.) uggggh. (they had it at Blockbuster)
