I'll admit this - at least Americans can live in their cars. You can't say that about European cars.

Some people live quite comfortably in their cars.

$this->bbcode_second_pass_quote('Novus', 'K')ind of funny how people in America get rid of their homes first before they dumb the car. You can live without a home but can't live without a car. This explains how we got into the mess we are in and where we are going.

I believe most people's logic here is that its pretty hard to continue to go to work or find a job without a car. Sort of like a cowboy without a horse.
The things that will destroy America are prosperity-at-any-price, peace-at-any-price, safety-first instead of duty-first, the love of soft living, and the get-rich-quick theory of life.

Yeah, she is a perfect example of the people that are first in line for the fall.

Older women alone, very little education, she was notary for crying out loud. But lots of boomers are in the same place, no savings getting older and the first to be let go, we are screwed.

And yup, people can live without an apartment but not without a car.

You can live in your car, but you can't drive your house to work.

That is one of the problems that we have yet to face up to as a nation and why many Americans see their right to 1/4th the world's oil as non-negotiable. We should have been building our apartments closer to where the jobs are, limiting the growth of suburbia, and enacting Euro style gas taxes 30 years ago. Now we stuck between a rock and hard place with no way out. The fall will be hard and swift.

Wow this hits close to home, I just jogged past the Mission tonight.

Santa Barbara is an incredibly affluent city. Lots of wealth here.

Sport Utility Vehicle (when you don't do any sports)
Sleeping Utility Vehicle (when you no longer have a home)
Stuck w. Useless Vehicle (when you can no longer afford gasoline)

I wish that lady luck.

I've never had a car and I'm doing fine. The only time I drove a car was when I lived with my parents, sometimes I used it to go to school.

But of course, I live in Europe, where decent public transportation actually exists.

Indeed try doing that in America. It is pretty much a drive or die kind of place. Not going to be pretty when the oil is finally shut off.

Ha. You don't see many sleek and aerodynamic minivans or camper vans on British roads. Instead you see cubic RVs on light truck chassis or SUVs pulling a trailer. Something like the old VW camper with bigger tyres would be handy, but those disappeared when the early 90s recession ended.

I don't want to sound heartless, but some of this is her own fault. She is working at a part time $8/hr job in a place where the median home is $1m. An $8/hr job is easily replaceable in just about any part of America. At full time, that's $320/wk, or about $1300/month. Add that to her SS and she could get a $500/mo apartment with money left over for other necessities. It just can't be done in Santa Barbara.

I don't get it, why doesn't she move to a cheaper city? She can live much better with $8/hr in a different city.

I think she is an idiot

Its personal choice. Even people with little resources who could be called "down and out" still have a few choices they could have made differently or could still make differently.

Its like the old joke. how many women with pms does it take to change a light bulb... none, they'd rather sit in the dark and bitch about it.

They may not actually be able to "make a choice." When people fall on hard times, they often become depressed. Depressed people have extreme difficulty making decisions or changing their behavior. It's difficult to know what this is like unless you've felt it yourself.
